Does #ArchiveOrg slow feed torrents so torrents don't get stopped?
I've a torrent that's been locked at 91% for days
I can go to their website &download as fast as my browser &internet will let me but when I use a #torrent, it seems to totally rely on everyone else that may be seeding that torrent. If they slow fed, I could have gotten the 90% elsewhere &the last 9 from them slowly or is it my issue
Do I start over &just download 100% from them to get the file–use their bandwidth? @textfiles
「 With BTFS, you can mount any .torrent file or magnet link and then use it as any read-only directory in your file tree. The contents of the files will be downloaded on-demand as they are read by applications. Tools like ls, cat and cp works as expected. Applications like vlc and mplayer can also work without changes 」
@jbzfn Wouldn’t it be great if this was our way to use public “shared Dropbox” or “shared drive” ?
Wish there was an intuitive UI for most operating systems to do this. You just drop something in a folder and it becomes a torrent you can publicly share . Maybe with some decentralized web structure which just lists the torrents and contents .
I have been reading about solutions for a not-always-on internet and this could be part of it.
daily reminder to always download! fuck streaming services! save mp3s of your favorite bands and torrent any movies you're interested in! the monopoly streaming services have on the media industry only works if you let it; there are always other options from supporting a corrupt system that steals from artists and only ever benefits the rich.
@supern0va additionally, FM radio still exists and there are lots of cool independent stations, depending on your location. Libraries are also excellent places to get media while supporting an essential community service.
It has finally happened! The long-awaited major update of Fragments is now available, bringing support for selective downloads / torrent files and much more! 🎉
@haeckerfelix IMHO "torrent files" is not the best choice of words for selecting which files to download. Torrent files usually means ".torrent" files.
@haeckerfelix Fragments was already my default Torrent app, but I'm so glad that the file selection is finally implemented. It was the only feature missing... until now! 🤩 Thanks for your wonderful work, now it's perfect! 👏
I know VERY little about this topic. But it has occurred to me that P2P could vastly reduce the need for insanely sized data centers and, subsequently, the environmental footprint of data.
Yes? If so, why isn't it used more widely? Not a good fit? Practical issues? Commercial interests? Political control?
This is the wonderful thing about Mastodon: For me it was just a passing thought after a public discourse on electricity consumption, and I can hardly make a coherent argument about it.
But I know that if I express my thoughts on a subject here, there are always smart and knowledgeable people like yourself who can send me down whole new rabbit holes of information. Thanks again!
Do #torrent and #webtorrent overlap at all?
Is there a torrent client that can seed both? I've seen a couple of unresolved issues on clients like qbittorrent, but I'm wondering if there's one people use.
Same question, but also for the tracker side, is there tracker software that both clients can talk to?
I had a dream tonight about an #activitypub implementation that I have not seen mentioned (yet).
What if there was a way to leak stuff anonymous, decentralized and federated without the possibility for government or big corporations to take down a Website or individual and stop it.
I think what I was dreaming was basically a mix between #torrent and #activityPub
Maybe there is something like that and I am not aware of it but in my dream it was a cool concept.
