Witnessing another occurrrence of the #ReplyGuy anti-pattern this morning inspired me to write some thoughts about this social behavior that is so common on our #Fediverse that is based on #PublicSquare#Microblogging mechanics.
On the #SocialCoding forum I created a category for #SocialExperienceDesign (or #SX) patterns, and the "Reply Guy" #AntiPattern is the first entry in what might be turned into a pattern library collection.
Some social behaviors are named with #UrbanDictionary slang, that may feel good to brandish about, but don't foster an inclusive culture. (Even while the terminology may have emerged like that with good reason)
In the fight for #gender freedoms, that are so under pressure, it feels contradictory to use terms as #ReplyGuy and #Mansplaining. It is like saying: "I care about gender, but don't mind to discriminate people based on gender stereotypes".
Boostable decentralized LIFO social feed services (like #mastodon) should implement a reddit-style rating system (but absolutely only for replies). It would make conversations here much better, deal with the #ReplyGuy problem and give us a better version of the #CommunityNotes feature they have over at #Xitter.
I am still trying hard to unlearn "yes, but" initial reactions to toots. I get better at trying to first understand what the OP (Original Poster) tried to express, ask myself if I can agree with that and if yes: How can I be supportive? If no: instead of posting a snarky comment to satisfy my ego, better to think again and again and start a new thread on that topic with maybe a mention of the OP.
I am on three social media platforms but it’s only here that people keep complaining about paywall articles (btw, I always post gift articles, but they can only be opened so many times). Why does Mastodon feel journalists don’t need to get paid?
@rikefranke
By the same logic, if I don't like the way you behave on the road, I shouldn't drive?
If I don't like the way you act in public transport, I should get off?
The statement, "If you don't like the way people post, don't follow them", is very conservative and sounds a lot like "If you don't like America, leave".
Asking people to improve their posting behaviour, be it, #altText, or not linking to paywalled articles, or pointing out #replyGuy behaviour is the social in #socialMedia.
I haven't used #Xitter since they implemented them, but #CommunityNotes seem like a really good idea. we could basically have that if all replies here functioned like reddit. threaded with up/down votes. no stars or boosts possible. imo #lemmy and #kbin should not be separate servers etc. no subreddits. hashtags instead. give us a sorting option when you click on one.
FAO white people: it's Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. More than a billion people in the world celebrate it. Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some sects of Buddhists set off fireworks over the days it occurs and is a major religious festival all over the world that happens annually. That's why fireworks are going off when it's way after bonfire night
@gocu54@stavvers I'm not mad. I'm amused that you think that I am for pointing out that you're uneducated on this & you're the one behaving pretty #butthurt about that - #replyguy
Keep making yourself look even more ignorant & foolish though. That's your own poor decision 👍
FYI - she never said ALL white ppl are uncultured.

WE ARE NOT ACTUARIAL STATISTICS
we how are here right now have a right to life. fuck the right to the pursuit. we have a right to life and happiness RIGHT NOW.
nothing that makes life worth living should be means tested
Using the term "Reply Guy" after only two posts where I disagree with your conservative aiding surrender of the term "populist" is the sign of a weak mind that hasnt thought their positions through especially when your bio says "Dont tone police me"
Any criticism of NATOs part in the Ukraine war gets at least two or three pro-west, pro-war a-holes dismissing what's been said as 'Russian propaganda' and usually with the crying-with-laughter emojis.
The west promised not to encroach too close to the Russian borders, then continued to encroach on the Russian borders.
Yet, somehow that means NATO had absolutely no part in the Russian invasion!
Putin's a warmonger and a terrible leader, but NATO pushed for this.
And it's clear when you look at these #ReplyGuy accounts, they are just pro-war accounts. All they write about is the Ukraine war and how great the west is.
And they accuse others of posting propaganda! Their accounts are so niche, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't people from MOD or the Pentagon.
What's hilarious is that they don't even read the articles you post. They just swim about the #Fediverse#GateKeeping certain hashtags.
I'd like to think I do my best not to be a #ReplyGuy, so if I see something that looks like a question, I'll always pull the thread first and see if someone else already answered it. It's easy for someone to boost something from hours/days ago, but that doesn't tell you if the problem/question/issue was actually solved or not. If you don't pull the thread it just turns into another rehash of the youtube comment section which Techmoan aptly demonstrates at the end of one of his videos by using puppets.
just saw someone unironically suggest that mastodon clients should take the pronouns from bios and make men confirm that they actually want to reply or @ a woman, or maybe not letting them at all.
if ever there was need of grass to be touched... even assuming that it was meant in the most positive and helpful way possible, that's still incredibly cringe inducing. big m'lady energy. big tech-bro-trying to-solve-misogyny-with-more-tech energy.
I should know this after 8 months, but... To reply to a post that already has some replies and make sure that my comment winds up at the end of the thread — do I reply to the original post, or to the final reply in the thread?
I get this wrong half the time and the problem is I don't know which half.
