Facebook/Meta starts talking about the "Extend" phase of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish as predicted:

"“You could imagine an extension to the protocol eventually — of saying like, ‘I want to support micropayments,’ or … like, ‘hey, feel free to show me ads, if that supports you.’ Kind of like a way for you to self-label or self-opt-in. That would be great,”

@Chocobozzz @thelinuxEXP @Techaltar @dansup @jwildeboer I would add that any implementation of a payment subsystem should probably be done at protocol level, so individual implementations of #ActivityPub don’t have to reinvent the wheel - doing #payments right is a hard problem, and it doesn’t make sense to fragment the efforts by solving the same problem multiple times on Mastodon/WriteFreely/PeerTube/Pixelfed etc.

The payments subsystem should be better integrated in the ActivityPub ecosystem compared to a “Donate here” link that redirects to a 3rd-party provider. This is probably the right chance of giving the HTTP 402 code the implementation it deserves.

I left the payments industry a few years ago so I’m not sure of what open solutions and protocols are in the market that could be already leveraged, but maybe something like OpenPayments could be a good starting point - there are many efforts on the open banking standards lately, with different degree of maturity, and IMHO a good implementation of payments over ActivityPub could be a great driver for adoption.

I’ve got the feeling that if we don’t do this right then Threads could scoop up this chance for an “embrace” to “extend” pivot.

We’re often asked “Love the savings, but how easy is an Open Banking payment?”

If you’re the customer, four taps from checkout and you’re done. If you’re the merchant, that money is already in your bank account - and it cost you a penny to receive it.

That’s what makes it Wonderful!

You were right about PoLi. I tried using it for 3 different bookings the other day. All 3 tried to get me to put my internet banking credentials into the PoLi site. No thanks PoLi. Backtracked and used a debit card.

I'm sure I remember it redirecting to my usual internet banking for authorisation, the first time I tried to use it.

A legal deal struck yesterday between MEPs, European Commission and the EU Council could spell an end to days-long delays in receiving cash for Europeans, who instead could soon transfer funds between bank accounts within seconds.

Instant payments, as they’re known, allow money to move in the blink of an eye — and a new EU law making them the default option across the bloc has been hailed as good news by consumer advocates.

Are QR code payments common in the and or ? I really like to know, so do tell me.

"For the past several years, the central banks of these countries have been attempting to connect their systems, allowing their residents to use QR payments for cross-border transactions without any fees, generally at better conversion rates than those set by payment processors like Visa and American Express."

@liztai Technically, no "" in . It is becoming more and more common, though, to have QR codes printed on invoices so your banking app can scan the transfer details (amount, target account), to save you time.

Can you recommend a legitimate service to buy Monero (for perfectly legal and ethically sound reasons) with SEPA?

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@maxi after all, #ec & #CreditCard #payments are deliberately designed to not be direct #WireTransfers into #Bank accounts.

For once these were created in the #USA which to this day does not have an actually functioning #WireTransfer system that comes even close to #SEPA in terms of cost-efficiency, speed, availability and ease-of-use:

People still get literal #cheques to cashout decades after #Germany phased out chequebooks and banned that even long before that.

Was idly curious if that whole Signal cryptocurrency payment thing was still around and yes, apparently. I notice more and more places in Aotearoa refusing to accept cash for payments, despite the fact that it's legal tender. If this isn't already illegal, it ought to be. If it is, those laws need to be enforced.

Some people prefer to keep some (or all) of our transactions private, rather than sharing data about them with banks, payment providers, and anyone else they share it with or sell it to. We have that right.

Does it seem like Elon Musk is getting even more erratic? Do you think he's losing his mind? Any explanation for #X that makes any sense at all?

deltatux,
@deltatux@infosec.town avatar

@mastodonmigration Well, legally #Twitter doesn't exist as a company, it was dissolved in favour of X Corp, Twitter is just a brand of X Corp. Now, he's just phasing out the Twitter brand for the X brand.

His vision is basically using Twitter to bootstrap his vision of making a western version of #WeChat where you can do everything in from realtime communications, WeChat has a small Twitter/Facebook-like feature as well. He's probably gonna integrate a #YouTube & #Spotify competitor in it and like WeChat it will do #banking & #payments.

Probably like WeChat other developers been write "micro-apps" to extend its functionality like ordering #Uber & UberEats, make a reservation through #OpenTable, #Amazon could also connect to sell you crap and the list goes on.

It will be the world's great data mining/surveillance operation in the hands of a single company...
