Strong retro-1980s vibe on the designs for the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure at the Disneyland Resort. Bonus points for the use of the Jiminy Cricket Recycling Icon. #TrashCanTuesday

These U.S. Cities Have More Parking Lots Than Housing - They paved paradise again and again and again.
by Frank Jacobs, Big Think May 17, 2024

"...On average, about one-fifth of all land in city centers is dedicated to parking. But what’s the actual harm being done by all that parking space? For one, city centers that are more “parkable” become less walkable. In other words, fewer things are casually accessible.

...Americans’ attitude toward driving is changing. The share of high school seniors with a driving license has dropped from 85.3% in 1996 to 71.5% in 2015. The rise of shared, multi-modal, and (soon, they keep promising us) autonomous mobility will further reduce the need for driver’s licenses, individual cars, and massive parking facilities in city centers.

Perhaps it’s time for American cities to become denser, more lived-in, more walkable—and less “parkable.”

Conversation with a man in my street.
Him: “this isn’t a legal parking spot, is it?” (hopeful tone of voice)
Me: “if it covers any part of the driveway, no, it’s not”
Him: “Including the red part?” (Of the curb)
Me: “Uh, yeah.”
(Duh. You’re literally asking if the red means no… it means no, dude)

Me, not saying: “I saw someone the other day taking pics of a car that was parked over the red area and better than you are so they could report it, so I wouldn’t park there”

It's pretty disappointing that City Council has yet to set a date for enforcement of the ban. The legislation was passed in 2019 so it's not like the officers didn't have plenty of notice. Maybe it will be enforced Sept '24, maybe not ☹️.

Good example of how folks focus on houseless people taking up public property while ignoring how housed people do.

This house has been doing construction for months. The sidewalk (sometimes), public parking, and public parkway have been blocked. Now part of the cycle lane is as well.

No one bats an eye. The stuff is not confiscated & taken to the landfill as many cities would do with houseless folks' belongings.#Housing #Parking #Classism #DavisCA @parkingreform

Death by Parking
Asia Mieleszko March 29, 2023

"...Furthermore, for Jordan it’s not just that parking mandates are antiquated, they’re fundamentally absurd. He points out how Dallas has drawn a distinction between a “dry cleaner” and a “laundry service” through its code, mandating that the former provide 30% more parking than the latter. “These are effectively the same land-use, so it just doesn’t make sense,” he says, adding that a laundry service is already required to provide one spot for every 300 square feet of space. With a single parking spot averaging around 350 square feet, this means that, at minimum, surface parking is required to be larger than the establishment, itself...."

Meanwhile we have a housing crisis, because people like to sit in traffic while the radio tells them that the size of their car loan is a status symbol.

The city of Stamford opened a massive new parking garage right next to the city's main train station. Now, just two weeks into its life, it is filled to capacity.

This is a basic lesson in induced demand, a concept that planners have understood for decades. It also highlights the inadequacy of the city's transit, bike infrastructure, and pedestrian infrastructure. The only way to solve traffic is giving people alternatives to driving.

Sigh. For every example of how removing traffic or from a downtown location helped foot traffic and livability there seems to be a counterexample. Bottom line: things are complex, and engineering the urban world we want to live in is not as simple as one might think. https://www.chron.com/culture/article/houston-duke-hollywood-bar-18926439.php

Actually, this will probably get pushed through. The developers of large apartment buildings hate providing space for resident car parking. They'd make more money using that space for more units. The only people who will oppose it are existing residents in the local areas, who park on the street. Many residents of large apartment buildings are still going to have cars, and they'll be competing for parking spots on the streets. Hilarity ensues. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/14/victoria-car-park-apartment-minimum-requirements-close-to-public-transport-ptal

@dragonfrog @SeanHawley @winterknell @jmcleod I've lived in cities ranging in size from 500,000 to 5,000,000. Never owned a car. Never regretted it.

Free/cheap is a terrible misallocation of public space, a massive subsidy to a subset of the population that results in making everyone's lives worse, yes, even drivers, who benefit enormously when a city actually has a well designed, safe, funded and functional system. And parking minimums are another way cities are made worse by design.

Look into the history of almost any city over a certain size in a wealthy country without decent public transport and you'll find the destructive fingers of the auto and/or oil industry thwarting attempts at more efficient and just transport systems.
