Linux kernel becoming their own CVE Numbering Authority (CNA) is wasting resources they'd have previously put towards higher quantity and quality backporting. We've noticed a drop in both for the stable/longterm branches and particularly Android Generic Kernel Image LTS branches.

@GrapheneOS we need #mobile devices that are #OpenHardware so that we have more choice than merely #android or #ios

Then we would be able to run something like #openbsd on our phones with some open source mobile interface on the top.

The mseal() syscall was merged for #Linux 6.10: https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/0b32d436c015d5a88b3368405e3d8fe82f195a54

It's a way to prevent changes to portions of the virtual address space – and quite similar to #OpenBSD's mimmutable() syscall.

For details see the docs (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/plain/Documentation/userspace-api/mseal.rst) or two @LWN articles (https://lwn.net/Articles/948129/ and https://lwn.net/Articles/958438/)

Changed my #OpenBSD writing-dedicated box from running #cwm to #i3wm -- I like cwm, but it's still a bit too mousey for my taste.

I also changed all of my fonts (both xterm and i3/i3status) to be bitmapped (the "fixed" font), so everything is looking REALLY crisp.

Maybe I'm getting quite crochety, but at this point, I think I'd much rather have a lower res screen with crisp bitmapped fonts than a crazy high-res screen and vector fonts.

The only thing I'm missing is #emoji. My i3status looks like
cpu 31% | load 0.80 | mem 9% | dsk 13.4% | net Gallifrey 82% | chrg 89% 0.00W | Sun 2024.05.26 06:42 AM

instead of
cpu 05% | 📈 load 0.29 |  28.5% |  disk 59.7% |  Gallifrey 67% |  Sun 2024.05.26 06:42 AM

OMG, I love . Never seen a major update on a [Li|U]n[u|i]x OS going through so smooth. And the sysmerge command that walks you through every config file change and let's you diff/merge/install them, is the perfect icing on the cake. 🍰

Gentoo and NetBSD ban 'AI' code, but Debian doesn't – yet

The problem isn't just that LLM-bot generated code is bad – it's where it came from.

🧵 …although I tend to favour OpenBSD and Linux for personal reasons, I find this decision OK. Certain open source projects lack clear, reasoned positions and decisions.

I'm as intrigued by as I was by , but ultimately I'm not sure the complexity is worth it for me.

Even has a ratio of complexity vs. benefits that fits well with my work (and play) flow.

, and all hide enough of the nitty gritty behind the scenes — updates happen without me needing to know it.

And traditional is so familiar and reliable, it's hard not to tap it for just about any use case.

Would be a free public shell account service based on #FreeBSD/#OpenBSD systems interesting for you? If yes, what would you run on it?

Please provide feedback, so @gyptazy can check if it makes sense to provide such a service (this is already available in a limited beta).

What to expect:
A free user login to a FreeBSD or #OpenBSD based system where multiple users can access it at the same time. You can do everything in your own home directory, run processes, open sockets, compile stuff etc. System is managed in general for you.

What you cannot do:
Make changes to the system in general, use low ports, install or modify things system wide.
