Senegal: The election everyone’s been waiting for

Getting to this point has been a long, dangerous and demoralising road for a country that – with good reason – considers itself to be a paragon of West African democracy. https://bit.ly/3Pyjf3m

It's safer for your followers if you put the original URL (link), not a shortened link. Shortened URLs can redirect to sites without the person clicking being able to judge the safety of the link before clicking.

A URL in Mastodon counts for 23 characters no matter how long it is.

Here's the actual URL:

Admins, remember, it's YOUR decision if you decide to defederate, block or mute Threads on YOUR server, or if you choose to NOT do any of those.

There are many others out there that will try and force their opinion(s) down your throat as much as possible, but in the end, the server is YOUR SERVER, not theirs.

You run your server how YOU want, not how others would like for you to run your server.

As they say, YOU DO YOU!

So, for a cool client, written by @terhechte
What’s neat about it?
Instead of showing a chronological POST timeline, it shows you a chronological POSTERS timeline.
So it’s like SMS/iMessage - you see it sorted by people, which can be nice if you’re wondering if you’re missing posts by folks in the flow of messges.
It’s open source and semi-cross platform (binaries on MacOS only).
Check it out!

Congrats to Mastodon for surpassing the 15,000,000 users mark as of a few minutes ago!

What a great milestone and so happy to see this place continuously growing with some awesome folks!

So, /
Bookmark your own posts

if you write a post, and you think you phrased something particularly well, or you had an epiphany of some sort: Bookmark that sucker

Sometimes, if you are replying to other people in a thread, it can be much harder to find the post later if someone deletes a message in that thread.

Absolutely feel free to bookmark your own posts. I mean it’s not like anyone else sees your bookmarks to judge you anyways 😀

Remember, using hashtags on Mastodon is very very important in so many ways.

If you want your posts to reach maximum visibility/discovery, hashtags are a necessity.

Hashtags are also used to search for stuff here on Mastodon.

If you're a new user to the and you're just getting started, do yourself a favor and use hashtags regularly.

Also make sure to use CamelCase for those with accessibility needs.

cdrom.tokyo have so many fuckin' issues. I've tried different browsers and time later it get useless: it turns blank. What the fuck?
Seriously should have their app so I could use it.
Again, I will be posting at nights from my laptop only.
Hope minidisc.tokyo won't have that shit...

@aldi80s

From my basic understanding, it's kinda easy to pick a new instance, Im in Japan and use the Germany instance, where you are is not an issue.

But, if you want to see pertaining to Japan then, you need to have an instance in Japan

NOTE, I only use the Android basic and never use a browser for Mastodon (but if I did I would use Firefox 🦊

If your home feed feels like it needs a pick me up, follow @trending_bot.

Maybe not permanently, just for an hour or so. It's a spice, not a meal.

If you want a better advanced web interface for Mastodon, try https://phanpy.social/
it's impressive.

Indeed https://phanpy.social/ , is a good alternative for the standard Mastodon WebView

ErikJonker, to random
@ErikJonker@mastodon.social avatar

The Mastodon timeline doesn't have any algorithms, so if you want to follow some developments/news it's a good idea to follow a hashtag with regard to the developments and pin it as a separate column in the advanced WebView.

Another useful search filter:

"search terms" in:library<br></br>

This searches through all the posts you have authored, boosted, or starred.

Decided to not be annoyed by, but to embrace the fact that Mastodon doesn't try to list all replies or the exact number of boosts and likes of posts from other servers.

They're a selection that reflects the interests on my local server. If I need see the exact answers and numbers, I can just copy the URL of the post, and open it in a separate browser tab.

Newbie question: Is there a way to see ONLY the replies that people have made to your posts? There are some people who have replied to me who I plan on replying back to, so I bookmarked the conversation, but I’ve bookmarked a whole bunch of other stuff to and the conversations are all mixed in. I just want to see the bookmarked replies (kinda like an inbox, I guess). Anyone have a solution for this?

luckystrike, to mastodon

Question for experts:

Let's say I want to follow someone from another instance. I hit "Follow," it asks me to type in my instance, then redirects me to login / follow from my instance.

I understand the mechanics of why this is necessary, but I'm wondering if there are alternative frontends I can use that make this a bit more of a cohesive experience, e.g. once I login, it remembers my instance and removes this hop for me.

paulomalley, to threads

Now that has begun the process of with the greater community (and the in general), I am seeing more and more instances that are electing to from Threads pre-emptively.
This means that they are not giving their users the choice as to whether they want to see this content.

If your Admin has decided to arbitrarily block Threads, and you wish to have access to the thriving there moving forward, I would suggest looking to your account to another instance that is maintaining Federation with Threads.

You will generally be able to see this information in the "Moderated Servers" section of your instances "/about" page. If you do not see it there, be sure to ask your Admin.

If you decide that you wish to make this migration, I have created some short guide videos on not only how to migrate your account across easily, but also another on how to ensure your list of followed accounts (and blocked ones) can be brought along with you.

Migrate your Account to another Instance: https://youtu.be/BpI-SplOXVE
Move your followed accounts etc to another Instance: https://youtu.be/bjzetO-zl3Q

Well oh boy do I have a treat for you! If you're like me and have at least three different Mastodon accounts (or even just one!), you can dom-block them quick fast and in a hurry...

  • Sᴛᴇᴘ 1: Login to your account. 🖼️¹
  • Sᴛᴇᴘ 2: Go to Settings, then Development 🖼️²
  • Sᴛᴇᴘ 3: Create a New application with at least write or write:blocks access. 🖼️³
  • Sᴛᴇᴘ 4: After you saved, click on the name of your application and copy Your access token 🖼️⁴
  • Sᴛᴇᴘ 5: Repeat for all your accounts, then run the following shell script... (with your info in the first part, of course)
readarray -t pw <<EOF<br></br>infosec.exchange  KEY1<br></br>mastodon.social  KEY2<br></br>defcon.social  KEY3<br></br>EOF<br></br><br></br>masdablock() {<br></br> local i c u p<br></br> while [ -n "$1" ]; do<br></br>  for ((i=0;i<${#pw[@]};i++));do<br></br>   read -ra p <<<"${pw[i]}"<br></br>   u="$p/api/v1/domain_blocks"<br></br>   u="https://${u}?domain=$1"<br></br>   c="Authorization: Bearer ${p[1]}"<br></br>   curl -H "$c" -X "POST" "$u"<br></br>  done; shift; echo<br></br> done;<br></br>}<br></br>masdablock threads.net<br></br>

Has anyone tried as an alternative Mastodon web-based UI?

I've been using it for the past couple of days and I definitely find it much easier to read posts.

For those not familiar, when you go to https://phanpy.social, you just specify your Mastodon server (like hear-me.social) when you set up the account and then log in using the same Mastodon credentials. You now have access to your account, but have a different UI is all.

There are, of course, some improvements I'd like to see, but I am very much enjoying it.
