A spirit in a human body… cracked open. Ready to see and be the world. Spent the last 7 years #permaculture homesteading in arid lands. That’s over now. Trying to find my way as a new spirit in a world of humans…weird. Wanting to just “be.” Looking to connect with the universe through all types of conduits (and people)! A #gradstudent studying #posthumanism, #consciousness studies.

Catiearms, to community

I’m seeking recommendations for PhD programs. My masters level graduate work is focused on #posthumanism, and I have extensive experience in #CommunityDevelopment. For my PhD research I’d like to merge the two fields to re-imagine how we do and be #community in the #Anthropocene. I’m looking for a program that is pretty self-directed and ideally offers opportunities for independent studies. I’m just starting this search process from scratch.

All suggestions welcome!

Catiearms, to academia

I’m looking for PhD programs that are pretty self-directed? I’m just starting my search for schools to apply to and wanted to reach out for recommendations and places to start my search.

Specifically I’m looking to study a combination of Posthumanism and Community Development. To my knowledge, this would be a very interdisciplinary degree, and thus I might need a school that offers an Interdisciplinary Studies PhD or something similar. Or possibly a degree in either Posthumanism or Community Development, but that is flexible and allows me to study across disciplines.

I also have done my entire masters degree with independent studies (self-designed coursework and evaluation) under various mentors, and I’m looking to continue that sort of learning style (though if I have to take a few structured classes I can plug my nose and dive in, lol).

Catiearms, to mastodon

I just created posts with content warnings and then put hashtags in the body of the post. It occurred to me that the hashtags may not work, or at least the post won’t show up for people who follow that hashtag. Is that correct? When I googled this, I was confused with the answers I found. Can someone please explain how this works? Thank you!

Catiearms, to mastodon

Is it a thing that #mastodon limits how far back you can scroll in your “home” feed? I keep trying to scroll to posts from earlier than 4h ago and it won’t let me. Is this normal or a glitch?

Is there a way to post a mastodon post on Bluesky? I know the Fediverse is all about cross-posting, but I have no idea how to do it.

@elaterite In rural AZ that used to be a strategy for erosion control… throw an old car in the wash… or a fridge

Ok, so can people please use the Content Warning feature?

I feel like in the recent month, the CW feature has been going ignored. I’ve put a bunch of filters on and triggering posts still leak through. Mastodon is about creating a safe space where people can connect. “Challenge by choice” is important here (meaning people need to be able to choose when they see super triggering posts), or people in the community will be forced to leave for their own emotional well-being. Mastodon doesn’t need to turn into an emotional rollercoaster like all the other social media platforms.

I know I’m not the only one bothered by this bc I’ve seen other similar posts. Let’s keep mastodon a safe emotional space for people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Please remember to use the CW feature!

Would be cool if mastodon had an option to go straight to posts from specific times: “click to go to posts from:” 1 hr ago… 2 hrs ago… 3 days ago, etc. Would help with incessant scrolling. I’m not wanting an algorithm to do this for me. I just want to be able to jump to earlier posts without scrolling through everything newer.

Wait, does Mastodon already have this option?

Okay! I’ve been thinking about the difference between Mastodon and Twitter… I noticed a post a while back about it. Took me a while to think, but here goes:

For me, Mastodon is about COMMUNITY. Straight-up, that’s it… Overall I have found the below to be true:
-People are genuine and interested in connecting on an authentic level.
    -Authentic one-on-one connections are common
-It’s not about promoting oneself or a company, but about supporting each other.
-Not a lot of distracting pictures.
-The community supports accessibility options for all different types of needs.
    -Not addicting (mostly, lol).
-Interaction between random people is a regular occurrence.
-Draws a unique audience, and certain people who don’t resonate with the community seem to self-select out.
    -People seem interested in learning.
-Generally a safe space to be yourself, no matter how weird you think you might be.

    Catiearms, to Travel

I’m looking for recommendations for a good place to visit in the United States, that is within 4-ish hour driving distance from any of Arizona’s borders. Want to get out of AZ, but can’t fly or drive too far right now. Want to go for 1-2 weeks. Looking for friendly area that has culture, but not too busy with humans. Some nightlife would be nice, I’m a night owl and it’s frustrating when everything closes at 8 or 10p. Close access to outdoor exploration is important. A place that isn’t super loud is necessary, or at least if the place is loud, I can stay in a nearby location that is quiet to get some peace (I have noise sensitivity). Not super hot (ideally under 90 degrees F). Not sure what time of year, but I’m thinking May-June.

    Any recommendations?

No joke I think you could make a fortune running summer camps for adults. I'd happily lie in a sleeping bag on the top bunk listening to rain pittering on the roof while we wonder which of the counselors are in loooove. Also, archery

@elaterite Whoa, beautiful! Is this mid-state California? Is that sage?

What prompted you to post this?

    Catiearms,

@elaterite I love the color! I wish I was in the market. I recognize those mountains.

That looks like one of my many “homes” :)

    Catiearms,

@elaterite one day I’ll get back out on the land…

I guess I was thinking of a different mountain range, I thought this was near Big Pine

    Catiearms, to random

It’s kinda weird living in a house after living on the land for so long. I remember when I first moved back into a house, it took me a few months to get used to using a toilet again (blech!), I broke the fancy glass-top stove with the first meal I cooked, was bummed out about how boring the ground felt on my bare feet bc I was used to a diversity in foot sensations depending on where I walked outside, and more. Now after a year and a half, I’m pretty settled back in to indoor living. But I still can’t believe how many problems I have that I never used to have when I didn’t live in a house! There are more things to take care of when you live indoors than outdoors. I keep asking myself… why do we live in houses? I’ve thought about this answer for a few years.

    Catiearms,

@elaterite 1/2 This post made me laugh! Because it didn’t occur to me that people might wonder about my shelter from reading my posts, but when I look back at what Ive previously shared about my experience, if I were you I would ask the same question, lol.

To answer your question… it was a mixed bag of shelters. We started out in a cheap camping tent for a year. That got pretty cold and hot (down to 12 degrees F, and up to 112 degrees F). We gave up on the tent and moved our bed into a shipping container with styrofoam insulation. Pretty primitive. We had an outdoor kitchen with a propane stove and square mini fridge for 3 years. And we built a ramada for shelter from the sun. Then throughout the 7-ish years, we just slowly kept upgrading and building new buildings and/or enhancing what was already there.

    Catiearms,

@elaterite 2/2 By the time I left, we had a really nice insulated wooden building (8ftx12ft) that had a full indoor kitchen and great heating and cooling. That was our sanctuary from the elements. We still slept in the shipping container. Outdoor shower (passive solar). Outdoor homemade compost toilet (that was “fun” to use when it was raining or lightning, lol). We did indeed have internet and we were hooked into the grid for electricity, but not water.
The way I describe it is: a huge 10-ish acre house with really long hallways, lol. Our kitchen was 300 ft from our bedroom, and so on and so fourth. I loved having to walk the distance to get to the different “rooms” because I was forced to interact with the land, rain or shine… a rattlesnake encounter was just a regular activity. It was wonderful!

In the last months of the 2,022nd year Earth Common Era, was led to the Mastodon herd by a werewolf from Melbourne, where they climbed up onto the thick matted wool of a beast affectionately known as AusSocial.
Dgar gripped onto the coat and screamed “Hello World!” No one except the werewolf heard.
Dgar began exploring, moving over the beast. So many interesting personalities, such diversity, and although no one seemed to notice them, Dgar noticed the inhabitants. They were being… nice to each other. Courteous and understanding of differing views and perspectives. Dgar was a bit weirded out, but continued to explore.

    Explore.

Suddenly the view opened up and Dgar saw the herd for the first time. Beasts just like AusSocial, but all different in their own ways, stretching to the horizons, as far as the eye could see. And there weren’t just Mastodons either. There were all kinds of beasts, all carving out their own little niche. Someone behind whispered “That’s the Fediverse.” Dgar felt the presence of millions of people, working together, competing, evolving, developing… and despairing.

Dgar wandered from feed to feed, community to community, and slowly began to realise that almost everyone was talking about the same things.

Billionaires ruined some place that wasn’t anywhere near as good as where they are right now.
The depressing state of politics and the media that supports it.
Despair over misinformation and the people who believe it.
    Gun control.
    Climate change.
    Natural disasters.
    War. Murder. Disease.
    Stop!

    There’s no jokes.
    There’s no shitposting.
    There’s no laughter.
There’s lots of love and understanding, but when you look for something funny, there’s a few people asking “Where are all the jokes and shitposters?”

Dgar resolved to fill this niche, and began tooting every joke they could find. For several months, they tooted a joke or meme every twenty minutes while they were awake, and as often as possible while they were asleep. They would traverse great distances, well beyond the herd, to sift through what at times seemed like piles of refuse to find puns and funnies.
After some time, Dgar became known for the funny toots, and many people followed them.

Today, like most days, Dgar climbed up to take in the view of the herd, and a giant smile broke upon his face. There were jokes. There were memes. There were terrible puns. The toots emanating from the very top of AusSocial were light hearted and humorous takes.
    It was beautiful.

And so Dgar finds themselves re-considering their place in the community. Does the Fediverse need Dgar to lift their spirit with stolen jokes, old puns, and scavenged memes?
    Maybe.
    But maybe not so much.

Perhaps the 2,024th year Earth Common Era will be the year Dgar begins concentrating on what Dgar loves.
    Making music.

Thank you all for your support. Big love to each and every one of you. ♥️

I’ve decided to dive into the world of Ursula Le Guin’s children’s books! Wow, that writer is amazing! Some of her stories have brought me to tears (“Fire and Stone”) and others have lit up my heart. Children’s books are such a wonderful way to connect with the “self,” and Le Guin’s technology for that purpose is especially unique.

I specifically want to highlight the book titled, “Tom Mouse,” as it encapsulates a mindset very well. It also might be my new favorite story, it’s just unique and amazing in wonderful ways! This is a colorful story where diverse beings come together to bring more joy to each other’s lives. It gives voice to marginalized populations including mice, moons, stars, humans of diverse color, age, gender. An excellent example of

Newbie question: Is there a way to see ONLY the replies that people have made to your posts? There are some people who have replied to me who I plan on replying back to, so I bookmarked the conversation, but I’ve bookmarked a whole bunch of other stuff to and the conversations are all mixed in. I just want to see the bookmarked replies (kinda like an inbox, I guess). Anyone have a solution for this?

Almost everyone who says "Mastodon didn't work for me" on Bluesky seems to have posted only "me me me" stuff for months (if that) on Mastodon, followed about 10-20 people, never replied to anyone and then gave up because "nobody there, it didn't fly".

It seems there is a big misunderstanding how this free and healthy social media works. We are not here for the easy wins, likes, shares and dopamine spikes. We are here because we accept the fact we are not part of the commercial hype machine. We choose natural engagement over spoiling algorithms, we choose conversation and meaning in our social media. At least that is how I see it.

    Catiearms,

@rolle I’ve been wondering about Bluesky vs mastodon. Wondering about the different populations it draws and what each are for. I have an account on both, but find myself drawn to mastodon. Been wondering what draws other ppl to Bluesky over mastodon.
