Wieder Mal eine Frage in die Runde, vor allem auch an die Insektenforscher....was ist das? Ort: Schweiz - 700 m ü. M.
Once again, a question for everyone, especially for the entomologists....what is this? Location: Switzerland - 700 m above sea level.
The blue-winged damselfly (Calopteryx virgo) (former name Common damselfly) came across me today in Bern Wittikofen - I was thrilled!

I was not prepared for how cute Hummingbird (Sphinx) Moths are.
She was sunning on the door, came back out to her in a deathmatch with a Towhee, so drove the bird off, got her into my hand, got her some heat then into cover, etc.
(she hadn't lost any bits, looked like I got there before injuries)
The depth of field isn't optimal, but it's still a pretty dragonfly that allowed me to make a few snaps from 4 feet away, while the light meter was completely and utterly wrong.
Straight from camera (#SOOC) other than some cropping #photography#insect#dragonfly#MyWork
Brass cast little sculpture of a wood cube showing tunnels carved by a woodworm. Of course the tree was already firewood when I found it, I only cut it into a rough cube. And the woodworm was long gone: Wherever you are, I hope you're OK, it was nice making this collab with you.
#introduction Hi, I’m new here, but I’m giving this Mastodon thing a try! I’m an ecologist by training, currently teaching intro bio to undergrads. I’m an #insect enthusiast with particular love for #bees, #wasps and other garden critters. I have a chaotic good #vegetablegarden and plant lots of #nativeplants for the yard critters. I’m also a #twinmom and #vegetarian#cook. Don’t have a #dog yet but I love to see photos of your #dogs. What are you #reading right now?
Red velvet ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis)
Day 22 of #invertober#invertober2023
They are actually a species of parasitic wasps. They use their bright colors as a signal to warn predators that they can sting (with a needle-like stinger hidden at the end of their abdomen) and so they should stay away. They display their coloration to indicate that they are not worth attacking. #cowkillerant#velvetants#wasps#wasp#insects#insect#hymenoptera#invertebrates
Der Große Wollschweber (#Bombylius major) fliegt und schwebt ganz anders als die ähnlich aussehende Hummel viel zackiger über den Boden. Wollschweber zählen zu den #Fliegen und sind harmlos.
I am super proud of myself, as I've just deleted a bunch of photos that were repeats or not good enough. It makes so much sense to organise them, but I find the delete button a tricky one to press sometimes.
Anyhow, I kept this one, because I like it. An imaginatively named small white butterfly, I think.
I spent a good while chasing burnet moths down the headland. I really like them when they fly, as they look like super-funky little black dots with bright red blurry wings.
This is the best of a relatively bad bunch of resulting photos, but hey, at least I got some exercise during the chase.
