Why do so many desert-dwelling ants from the southern areas in Africa have fuzzy gasters? These are basically very similar to carpenter ants from other parts of the world, in most places there is a species of Camponotus this size, often black with majors and big colonies, but in the desert they get so lovely with their fuzzy bums.

These ants are common in South Africa. Camponotus fulvopilosus queen and a worker holding a pupae. These ants are a dark matte black with light brown fur on their gasters.

@llewelly @futurebird I was going to say the opposite: the color of the hairs on the C. detritus appears to help her stand out less against the color of the sand. And maybe having irregular light/dark areas and different colors works in a similar way to human military camo.
So maybe mimesis?

@daisy but you're onto something here. It never occurred to me to extract palettes from my pic. I could use those 3 colors on a limited pixel art and it would work 🤔

    @NatureMC I'm not sure about what kind of people you're talking about and I'm curious. I'd say that people who are against both journalists and artists are mainly right-wing nutjobs, am I wrong? Every country has their particular strain but they are the MAGA type. That kind of people?

    I'm so safe here in masto.art that I'm not up to date on most internet dramas.

    I miss the days when nothing got past my irony detector, but the world has become such a parody that I can't tell reality from exaggeration anymore.

    Curator, to random

    My mum is visiting (from Wales to South Africa) on Thursday for two weeks so I'm taking a bit of a vacation, and one of our mods @ArtistMarciaX (they/she) will be taking over the Curator account for the time :D They have freedom to use the Curator account however they see fit during that time, boosting art and discussing anything they feel is important that this platform can give voice to.

    The 'Curator' nick will change to reflect that and we'll make a note in the account bio too.

    I picked-up three empty potter wasp nests and left them there, waiting for better light to photograph them. But it rained and the mud dissolved. I kind of like the result.

    One of the moderation-related things we do on .art is curate the trending hashtags, trending links, and trending posts, to be art/creativity/positivity-related. Our moderators go through everything that's trending in the backend admin interface every day and 'allow' things to trend that are relevant to being on a creative-focused instance.

    I always read your descriptions and content before . I follow if you have 10 or 100,000 followers IF I'm interested.
    But now we are downgraded to a name with follower numbers. Before the change, I saw personalities. (App seems still ok)
