DuckDuckGo was down most of today. Discovered that it’s because Microsoft’s infrastructure is down.

My latest story for the Globe & Mail newspaper: cheap armed drones, manufactured by the likes of UAE, Turkey, Iran & China, are causing mayhem across Africa.

Sudan, Libya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burkina Faso & Nigeria, have all seen drone massacres in recent times. Co-authored with legendary journo Geoff York, we cite five atrocities caused by drones that now cost as little as $1 million.

Also features survivors of a Feb 19 drone massacre of 30 civilians in Ethiopia.

One To Fourteen.

One of the more important articles I've written on CoffeeGeek in some time. It's all about getting the best possible cup of pour over, siphon, press pot and AeroPress coffee, but without the need for an expensive (or even inexpensive) scale.

Read, and share, if you like!

@coffeegeek @coffee Yes. I second that. 16g:200ml is the optimum baseline ratio.

Fully agree with @Mer__edith Governments must not buy into the AI FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) that is deliberately played up to get attention, fuel speculation, raise valuations and choke off competition by inviting regulation.

Mastodon: always an opportunity for people to lecture you when you’ve made a frivolous point that they took all too seriously

nitin,
@nitin@thinktanki.social avatar

@jon @codeyarns Seriously, I think that’s a problem with any social network that grows beyond a “contextual community threshold.” When you can’t presume that its members share the same background, motives and norms.

nitin,
@nitin@thinktanki.social avatar

@jon @codeyarns It happened on Usenet, mailing lists, IRC and blogs before social media. I think it’s mainly about the size of the connected community…of course, some platforms suffer the same malaise at higher intensity.

Trying a retractable fountain pen was one of the best decisions ever. ✒️

Since I mostly use pens to jot short notes or annotate, uncapping and capping a regular fountain pen is just too much effort. Clicking on a retractable is so low effort that I transitioned over almost completely from gel pens at home.

Some used their freedom
to imprison themselves in cages
of their own making.
Others, in the stories
they told themselves.
Some held their freedom so dear
that they kept it locked up.
Others insisted using theirs
to lock up that of others.
Some claimed everyone must have it
and everyone did.
Others said it was merely an illusion
and no one really had it.

Going through a box of my late grandfathers belongings from the Second World War. 📦

There’s a lot of good stuff here with a lot of history behind it. 🤓

But does anyone have any knowledge of what these daggers are? Specifically the silver one. 🗡️

There’s something inscribed on the blade. I’m not sure what.

A dagger with a black handle.
Inscriptions on the silver blade.

nitin,
@nitin@thinktanki.social avatar

@matt @smurthys First, please be careful in handling them. I was scared when I saw them held over your lap while seated.

You have a German fireman’s bayonet (the one with a black sheath) and a Palestinian Shibriya dagger. Your grandfather must have been a collector.
