Last week we shared a number of updates with our community of users, and now we want to share them here: At Mozilla, we work hard to make Firefox the best
The fork of Firefox, Floorp, is going closed-source. Because the lead dev was annoyed that some people were forking it. :blob_nervous: https://blog.ablaze.one/4125/2024-03-11/
@helpers For the past few days i've puzzled over the fact that my browser (#Floorp)) had stopped displaying #DesktopNotifications for my #Friendica account, despite me still having them enabled both in Floorp, & in #KDEPlasma. As Floorp had had an update several days ago, i began wondering if maybe the latest version might have broken its Notifications function. However today i eliminated that possibility by verifying that also my Vivaldi & #FirefoxNightly browsers no longer give me my Friendica DN [&, like Floorp, they certainly used to]. So then i began wondering if maybe @alfred might have recently upgraded their server version of Friendica, & that said putative version was buggy. I decided it would be judicious to take a quick look at my Friendica account Settings, before posting a question about that.
Whoa! Well, i found the problem... but i do not understand how/why. Many months ago soon after creating this account, i had adjusted all my Settings to suit my preferences, & ofc one of those was to enable Desktop Notifications [otherwise, for months, i'd not have been receiving DN in all three browsers, til recently]. However, now, that setting had been lost, ie, it had reverted to default, ie, disabled.
Wtf? 😮
Now that i've re-enabled it, happily i'm once more getting my Friendica DNs. 🥳🎉
But... how on earth had that setting become disabled recently? 🤯 🤷♀️
And now I learned about the browser named FireDragon, trough the latest @thelinuxEXP video. Looking it up, I find out that it's actually based on #Floorp!
Does #Friendica have an #AddOn that the instance-owner can install on their server, which allows per-post translations, like nowadays widely available in Mastodon? 🤷♀️
@utopiarte T/y. I use a desktop browser [#Floorp, an excellent #Firefox#ESR fork] & in the absence of a more elegant option, have been copying target posts to clipboard, then pasting into my Floorp #WebPanel of about:translations. This though is clunky & "high friction" such that i often lazily instead opt to skip right over non-English posts in my timeline.
Given there's apparently nothing server-side to help here, prolly i shall reinstall the FF #AddOnaddons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef… which i uninstalled comparatively long ago once FF's native local translation tool came along. The AO has one advantage over the native tool though, it includes a context-menu option to translate selected text. I didn't need that any more back in Masto, but it seems now here in #Friendica, i need it again.
Floorp is to Firefox, what Vivaldi is to Chrome. You can customize its layout, add vertical tabs, move navigation bar without complicated steps & configure options directly in settings which are usually hidden behind about:config in Firefox
It is official, @Vivaldi have included advertisment into your address-bar suggestions. This is opt-out, so it is enabled by default and is triggered only after two characters in your address-bar.
For me, the address-bar in a browser is like terminal in Linux, what I type is sensitive and should not be cluttered with advert and junk. #Vivaldi crossed a big red line here. Having advert in favorites and quickdial is one thing, having advert in address-bar is another.
Atm #Floorp :floorp: does not have native tab-stacking, but with either of the Add-Ons #TreeStyleTab or #Sidebery you then get superb tab-stacking {& more stuff]. 🎉
Atm :floorp: does have native#Workspaces [which are compatible with TST but not S].
Atm i use S for tab-stacking AND its tab-panels [which are workspaces by another name], with :floorp: native workspaces disabled [due to the incompatibility i mentioned]. This works brilliantly! I am absolutely loving it. I have all the good stuff that i used in Vivaldi [not ALL Vivaldi's stuff, but the subset which was important to me], & none of the bad aspects, plus the native #Firefox goodies. 🎉🎉
Workspaces will be deprecated in the near future and removed in the future.
The team is currently developing a Tab Stacking feature to replace Workspaces.
Wrt my remarks about #Sidebery, let me try to help you see what i mean, via these three pics. At the moment i have several dozen tabs open [though many are hibernated atm]. We can create an infinite number of Sidebery "tab panels" [aka workspaces], but for now i use just three, unimaginatively called "Daily", "Soon", & "Later". Ofc you can call them anything you like! The following pics show each of my panels, one at a time, with their array of current tabs [active & hibernated], some as individual tabs, many combined into groups [what Vivaldi calls "tab-stacks"]. I adore the fine granular control Sidebery gives me! 💜
@jerry Oh, btw, fwiw, a nice fork [has some great extra bells & whistles] is #Floorp :floorp: for pooters [afaik, not yet available for phones, though tbh as i don't care about that i've not explicitly checked]. Using it right now to type at you on my #ArchLinux pc; changed to it from #FirefoxNightly :firefox_nightly: a couple of months back.
@odddev If you search fedi for the #Floorp tag you'll find many of my older toots on it. In one [at least] i listed the main omissions. For now, here's a quick & dirty pic. The green ones are excluded in Lightning. The yellow ones might be as well; atm i cannot remember clearly. Additionally, iirc, even in the "surviving" sections, various options are also omitted.
Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin #uBOwill be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 (#Mv3).
The new #Chrome manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only #Google authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube #AdBlockers .
#ManifestV3 is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to #Firefox (@mozilla) and/or #TorBrowser (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!
EDIT for clarification: MV3 in Chrome will still allow some ad blocking extensions, but will severely limit their blocking ability and even restricts pre-set filters to 50 MAX.
Having fedi-hopped late last night to infosec.exchange #InfosecExchange [again, 🤭], i was keen to see which of my fav #FOSS#emojis are available here in the toot-composer emoji-picker.
Dear @jerry i know you've been extremely busy doing all manner of hardware magic, but might i pls ask if you could add importing the missing [above] emojis, sometime over coming weeks, if your pace becomes less frenetic? All except my newest browser [#Floorp] are available, iirc, in the tech.lgbt & aus.social Instances, & i read somewhere recently that apparently importing emojis that already exist on other servers is "doable" [?]. Thanks 🤞
EDIT:
After @jerry so kindly added all "my" emojis, & pointed out that the correct one for Vivaldi Snapshot is actually vivaldi_gray not my assumed vivaldi_grey, i've now retrospectively fixed it in my OP, above, coz i can't bear looking at all my beautiful emojis all shiny & wonderful, but for that [originally] broken one. 🤪
Last week i used Vivaldi exclusively on Windows,Linux and iPhone and this week spent back on Brave and while i like their (Braves) privacy features and believe they offer more in this regard than Vivaldi their crypto focus is a big annoyance of mine.
So today went back to Vivaldi and one major annoyance really is how adress url autocomplete works so the upcoming 6.2 update should adress that and can´t come soon enough.
And no reader view on iPhone yet in Beta. Submitted a FR for it through TF feedback but im assuming it will come at some point. Oh, and sync of search engines does not work but hopefully it is also being worked on.
But Vivaldi on iPhone is shaping up quite nicely
And secondly why is there no merch shop in EU? 😅 I´d be happy to support with a purchase. But shipping and tax to get anything into Sweden from USA is a bit too much for me. Your HQ is next door (country wise) so not having shipping within EU is a bummer.
Just discovered that both Librewolf and Floorp are available through Flathub..
Librewolf I’m familiar with and have no special reason really to install more than try it out again since it’s been a while. I’ve already removed much of the junk from regular Firefox. And the OOTB experience of LW i don’t need, I use Mullvad Browser to cover that.
Floorp will be a new experience. Looks interesting and it gives me a Vivaldi:esque feeling. Always a bit iffy using something as important as a browser from someone new.
Here’s what we’re working on in Firefox (blog.mozilla.org)
