Larch Peds project: I am finally beyond all the fiddly parts of Sock 1 and am headed down the foot towards the toe. In case it’s not clear that I own a lot of clothes in a similar color scheme, lounge pants also pictured (admittedly more purple-ish than maroon/red). The join of the inside of the cuff to the outside shows more than I expected when worn, but it’s not unpleasant. #knitting#FiberArts@knitting (remove group in reply)
Finally finished the basket I started last autumn. The frame and ribs are wisteria. The gods-eyes are my handspun wool-alpaca blend that I dyed with sandalwood (that was an experiment I'll never repeat). Most of the weaving is braided cordage I made from day lily, yellow flag iris, and gladiolus leaves. I ran out of my homemade cordage and ended ip finishing the center of the basket with braided strips of leather scrap from some thrifted jackets I had used to reupholster our dining chairs. So it's a motley, rustic combination, but I'm happy with it.
Someone asked me a while back what needle set up I use for the gusset on my socks and here’s a good example. I normally use FlexiFlips for socks but for these Larch Peds I switched to an 8” circular. Which means with FlexiFlips + extra needle, I have precisely my preferred set up for gusset - one needle for instep stitches, one needle for each side of the heel, and one needle to knit with. I’ll probably make this my toolkit for socks going forward! #knitting#FiberArts@knitting
I finally had the time and the spoons simultaneously to turn the heel on my first Larch Ped Sock. I also set up for the gusset (which I hope to do right now) so I am happy to report this “Lola’s Pick Up” technique worked just as smoothly as @terri and @LoraHughes said it would. Thanks to you both for the positive example and inspiration. #knitting#FiberArts@knitting
I had planned to either warp my loom or work on cutting out fabric for my pants project today, but neither of those would have been fun with a sore back. So I called my mom, did some knitting on my year long project , and finished the bee embroidery instead.
I have a "no buying yarn unless you have a project in mind" rule, buuuut I might have ordered 5 skeins for a yet-to-be-planned sweater project 🙈
I'm thinking something like this cabled mesh sweater? With those traditional 90s punk stripes (you know the ones). With or without the color work skull (to be decided)
This week’s blog post is actually a complete redo of the chart and instructions for Raven lace, which I first posted back in 2016. A commenter asked me a question that made me realize that I’d left out the part of the instructions that would let people knit the lace to look like my sample. Ooooops!
If you’re stymied by any of my instructions, please let me know. I want to improve things!
This post on yarn length and weight generated some interesting discussion. And assuming that many of the people who responded all-metric probably live in metric-based parts of the world, it seems like a high percentage of US and Canada based peeps use yards and grams together. Grams for specificity when weighing! Yards for ease of body measurements! Thanks all for your insights! #knitting#FiberArts@knittinghttps://wandering.shop/@consumablejoy/112194237175594015
This month’s stitch patterns designed from a word suggested on my Patreon are based on the word Cedar (for the birders out there, I’m told it was inspired by Cedar Waxwings).
That's a top down (more or less) raglan construction, about 10 cm below the separation of body and arms.
According to the order confirmation I should have 5 cones of the yarn, though I can't find one of them at the moment. But with 500 m / 100 g I should be fine, even if that cone really doesn't reappear again.
Ravelry has a stash tracker and yet today I spent a bunch of time assembling my own stash tracker in Notion. I now have a relational database with tables for Yarn Companies, Yarns, Stash, and Sets (yarns which were meant to go together, like sock sets or shawl kits). I decided not to use Rav for this because I can control a lot better what data I collect and display. But also just because hey I like doing this kind of stuff. #knitting#FiberArts@knitting
Larch Peds heel flap completed, next step turning the heel, but we are planning to hit the slopes now to make the most of the waning days of this ski season. #knitting#FiberArts@knitting
Not quite dry yet in this photo, but here's a peek at my results from dye class at Knitted Wit / Craft Emporium today!
We learned 3 different techniques and I bought an extra skein just to make a rainbow. I'm definitely going to try their "giggling" technique again at home. If you're in #pdx they've got another class coming up that still has spaces and I highly recommend it!
I finally had a chance to sit down with some focused time and finish up the cuff on my Larch Ped socks. I’ve been enjoying watching @terri and @LoraHughes work on theirs and I have made no progress on mine until today! Starting on the heel now. #knitting#FiberArts@knitting
@terri@LoraHughes@knitting I started the heel 3 times because I wasn’t paying attention. The 1st time I forgot the s1 k1 repeat until I suddenly thought hey this heel flap looks weird. The 2nd time the spare cord I was using for “Lola’s pick up” slipped out and I decided to try again because I am curious about this new method. 3rd time at the heel is the charm? I did a few rows and now I am stopping before I mess up. #knitting#FiberArts
Honestly, I've been feeling less like embroidery is a thing I want to do and more like it's just that thing I can do when I want to avoid repetitive strain from my other crafts. But I think I'm just really bored of this particular piece?
This is a kit from Cozy Blue, which a lot of people recommended to me, but I think it's not a great fit for me. I apparently max out at around 4 inch diameter of attention span for embroidery. This is a bit too big and repetitive, and unlike the constellation hoop, this one didn't lend itself as well to being divided up into a year long project of smaller pieces. (Though I do think it's taken around a year.)
It is pretty, but I'm so glad there's not much left!
The great 2024 #decluttering has turned up this. It’s a washable colouring in map thingy. I’m very tempted to turn it into a small quilt. Maybe with flags around the outside as a border? Could maybe colour in the critters with embroidery? 🤔
Current project, this is my first attempt at cables and my first attempt at a sweater, so it’s an adventure all around. I finished the first full repetition of the pattern and I think it’s going well so far! There’s a couple of mistakes in there but they’re minor enough to live with. I’m paranoid that I’m going to finish the sweater and it won’t fit, though 😅
