Currently if King County WA needs to produce an evacuation map they only do so as a PDF. County emergency management (EM) staff says it would be very expensive to have county GIS staff produce an interactive evacuation map.
I volunteered to write data conversion code (geojson > kmz) so King County WA could use Google maps as an interactive evacuation map.
EM staff says policy prohibits them from using outside help that is not officially approved. So I contacted county procurement asking how I can get approved as a volunteer consultant. See pic for their reply. #PNW#EmergencyManagement#Wildfire 🙄 🤦♂️

The United States Geological Survey warned that nearly 75% of the U.S. could face potentially damaging earthquakes and intense ground shaking in the next 100 years.
The agency shared new maps Wednesday, showing the areas that are most at risk. A team of more than 50 scientists and engineers created the map based on seismic studies, historical geological data and the latest data-collection technologies, according to the USGS.
They were able to identify nearly 500 additional fault lines that could produce damaging earthquakes.
Watching an office of emergency management training on an evacuation zone software currently turning on random evac zones (visible to the public) this morning, wondering if they are sending out alerts or not 🤔 #EmergencyManagement#EOC
One of the more innovative items announced by the Governor’s office when it comes to disaster relief measures is the creation of a Lahaina Recovery Fund. In a press release announcing the measure, the Governor’s Office said that the concept was similar to the 9/11 Fund created in the aftermath of the destruction of the […]
I had the pleasure of attending a post-fire season #baer meeting with #usfs Region 6 staff earlier this week. A lot of topics were covered by the Interim BAER Coordinator, including threats to Hwy 199.
I'm hopeful that interagency coordination and collaboration will be the continued focus next season.
Thinking back on recent breaking news events (Maui wildfire, Hamas attacks on Israel, Hurricane Otis rapid strengthening and the Lewiston mass shootings) and criticism of Mastodon not having enough active news accounts to be useful in breaking news situations, I learned about all these events first on Mastodon and before I got breaking news push notifications from major news outlets.
Hmmm, my phone is all set up to receive earthquake early warning alerts but, sadly, I didn't get the planned test alert this morning. #ShakeAlert#Earthquakes#EmergencyManagement
#BritishColumbia "Provincial legislation introduced last week significantly expands the definition of an emergency, recognizes #ClimateChange, and grants First Nations additional recognition and say in #EmergencyManagement."
“#NorthAfrica is not immune to #ClimateChange, but this is also about #corruption and incompetence. In #Morocco perhaps you had seconds or minutes when the tectonic plates moved, but here in #Libya there was plenty of warning about this hurricane … yet there was no evacuation of #Derna. "
The #UN’s World Meteorological Organization chief Petteri Taalas said many deaths could have been avoided if #EarlyWarning and #EmergencyManagement systems had functioned properly in the war-scarred country. #LibyaFloods
I agree there's too many shoddy plans. It's exhausting.
What's the reason? As a colleague asked - lack of knowledge? Time constraints? Sub-par levels of "give a damn"?
It's probably lots of things, but I'd like to start improving plans by not focusing on the regulatory driver (use planning to align objectives FOR REAL). Also, throw out the templates. Write YOUR plan.
Im currently working on starting a project to build resources for small organizations such as local non profit groups and emergency services to use to get started on the fediverse and away from having to rely on the major social media platforms to get there news and critical info out to people.
I have the domain names fediconnect.org and fediconnect.social I plan on using for this.
Once I have the basics up and running I'm hoping to find a few people interested in working on this project

Just filled out an online survey from Notify NYC. They asked what social media I would like to receive notifications on. Of course I told them to "Ditch Twitter. The MTA just did." then suggested NYC should create its own Mastodon server "like the European Union did."
