I'll be unable to post for several hours today...

even breaking news, I think.

We'll see.

I'll be oot and aboot looking at houses (not buying, just scouting areas) with our agent.

She has a ton lined up from 11:30-3:30 PT, just to get an idea of what we want.

Hiker_Scott,

@GottaLaff enjoy! I hope it goes well.

If you're up in near Westhill / Glenayre wave towards the park! (I live right beside it)

Hiker_Scott,

@GottaLaff Port Moody's Southwest corner, at the base of Burnaby Mountain just under SFU.

I suppose sunsets in Vancouver are okay.

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei lol ... Though today might not be the ideal day to get rid of bridge infrastructure... 🫢

Today starts a new feature, "Ask Leela!" I will pass your technical, policy, and political questions on to #Leela, and she will answer them via me to the extent that she feels is appropriate. She reminds me however to ask you not to send any questions that involve feline proprietary information.

Hiker_Scott,

@lauren Leela, do you accept followers?

Jasper loves to follow/track cats

I started off my vacation with $70 in AirMiles cash. During the vacation I used $110 of AirMiles Cash and am still left with $30 in the account.

I don't know how long AirMiles / BMO can keep up the promotions but I'm good with this!

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei the promotions have been great, I've pretty much already gotten an extra $70 from just the gas fills I would have done anyway over my two week vacation, plus I'm also owed around $50 more in air miles from other promotions that just hasn't come through yet.

There is a bit of "finesse" required to maximize the miles (have to opt-in to promotions, know when to stop the pump or set redemption to maximize earn or value, etc) but it's not rocket science

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei We mostly earn and redeem from Shell, where we already get a 3¢ discount through BCAA and it's easy to make sure we're paying the lowest price at the same time.

Other places, like Amazon, we are paying the same price as someone who doesn't collect AirMiles.

They're definitely losing money on us, but that's okay. ;)

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei Nordic Skiing!

For the most part Jasper wasn't pulling but for hills where I let Dawn go first he'd get upset and pull.

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei depends on the location. That area requires dogs on leash whereas Nipika (where we were on Wednesday) is off-leash.

While he was off-leash at Nipika for much of the ski he wasn't for the full thing because we can tell when he's in troublemaker mode (note the GPS collar in this one)

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei the collar has a GPS antenna to get coordinates, then transmits them via the 900MHz band to a dedicated handset which has Delorme maps loaded on it. You can see yourself and the dog(s) synced with that handset as well as the trails.

No internet/cellular needed (which is essential as we play well away from service areas). Range is "rated" to be 14km, but in the mountains it's practically about 1-1.5 km.

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei yup, each device (each collar and and each handset) can have a unique code which will let you program multiple humans and dogs into the map program

I have to say that we managed to time our Alberta (Kananaskis/Banff) Nordic ski trip perfectly this year. First few days had a very thin base, but then the snow hit.

Monday we chased the groomers at Pipestone.

Wednesday was "the best conditions of the season" at Nipika.

Today had awesome snow conditions at Mt. Shark.

Tomorrow will be a last gasp at Mt Shark early before temps go above zero.

At or above zero highs are forecast for the rest of the week, we were lucky to get the cold spell!

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei Jasper would like you to know:

  • run fun is fun
  • waiting is not fun
  • please can we just run fun

I still chuckle at the "Less Dry" setting on a dryer.

@Hiker_Scott This (expensive) water bottle claims to make water safe to drin with UV light. Thoughts? Ofviously, for a long trip, you would need some way to recharge it. Or is this not enough and one really need a mechanical filter to do more than just bacteria?

https://www.livelarq.com/purification/larq-bottle-purevis-insulated-monaco-blue?size=500ml&utm_medium=content&utm_source=youtube&utm_campaign=b1m&utm_content=b1m1

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei there are three categories of things that can contaminate your water:

  1. particulates, such as leaf bits, fecal matter, dirt, clay, etc
  2. bio contaminants -- bacteria and viruses
  3. chemicals -- benzene, dioxin, natural crude oil, gasoline, motor oil, paint, etc

This only gets rid of #2, though UV light might cause changes to chemicals too (not necessarily for the better).

Hiker_Scott,

@jfmezei correct, you need to be relatively confident in your water source either way, though an active carbon filter will at least get rid of some of the heavy metals that this won't touch.

As far as the effectiveness of the UV light, it would depend on whether the light can touch the contaminate. So if you're unfortunate enough to get a larger piece of feces, no, it wouldn't kill what's inside.

On this #Caturday, #catsofmastodon and their human servants should watch this video about how to get ready to evacuate... With your pets.

Planning now means things will go a lot better when an emergency happens.

First 10 minutes are human preparedness, the pet specific stuff starts at 14:47.

I am perennially reminded how stupid it is that Alberta does not have a winter tire requirement, especially in the mountainous areas.

Again, as always, in rough conditions you can find plenty of cars in the ditch.

My wife and I even helped out two vehicles that managed to get themselves stuck, both rental cars, both with high performance summer tires.

Something I don't understand...

In Canmore, Alberta there is a housing shortage.

There are inexpensive condos you can buy with great amenities, perfect views, etc.

But you're not allowed to live there. You can visit, sure, but only for a few weeks a year.

The rest of the time it can sit empty or you can rent it out on AirBnB and the like. You just can't live there.

I honestly don't get it.

Hiker_Scott,

@douglasvb nope, they just have a large zoning area that is zoned "visitor accommodation" or "hotel condo" that simply doesn't let anyone live there. Even if it's owned by the person, has 3 bedrooms, all amenities, etc.

https://www.liveworkplaycanmore.com/canmore-zoning

It's not just Canmore either in the area. Dead Man's Flats have hotel condo only zoning as well.
