> it’s highest value lies in the fact that it empowers people by showing them that they can start to take steps to regain control over their personal data, to drop corporate services in favor of self-hosted FOSS services which don’t trade in users data.
Do you really need Wifi disconnected or would it be enough that it doesn't interfere while connected to Ethernet?
If the latter is sufficient, just put Ethernet and Wifi interfaces in a bond
and set the bond to active-backup.
Configure the Ethernet interface as the primary member of the bond and set the bond to always fall back to the primary.
i'm still tinkering with #spectrwm (on #debian 12) and i think i figured out the audio volume display in the #baraction script that i want to use.. ..now on to other aspects of this config.. ..is there an elegant way to add a system tray?
I think I got my #Grandfather so far, that he is willing to install #Linux with me on one of his Machines. I would choose between #KDE Neon and #Linuxmint for him. Or am I completely wrong? What do you think?
P.S.: He is not like the stereotype grandfather who has no idea about tech and conputers, so it must not be the most simple way, but also not the most complicated.
I guess a #debian based distro will be fine...
Oh and no *buntu #distros!
Switching from (contributing to) #Debian to #NixOS changed a few things. What it doesn't change is the kind of interaction with upstreams that, well, at least I find strangely hard to work with. Oh well, my strategy is to raise a shield of intense humility and politeness, and else shrug away all the mistrust and misunderstanding that otherwise could wind me up.

I also updated the #Debian Kernel Handbook to fix some outdated information and instructions. Those changes should be included in the upcoming Debian 12 "bookworm" release, and are already live in the web version: https://kernel-team.pages.debian.net/kernel-handbook/
I've setup a few installs of #LinuxMint#Debian Edition (LMDE) for family, friends, and myself. I really like it! Mint's Cinnamon desktop comes with sensible defaults, is easy to customize, and intuitive to use for new and old #Linux users alike.
If I'm running Firefox on Ubuntu, and I want to send it a message asking it to open a new tab on a specific URL ... can I do that from the command line?
@ColinTheMathmo#Debian's #firefox-esr connects with a runniung session from cmd line, and recognizes command line options firefox-esr -new-tab URL and -new-window URL, and will do whatever is default for you when giving just the URL. Doesn't it work under Ubuntu? [if you're under an ssh connection, there's more]
My new open source operating stack consists of #almalinux , #debian, #linuxmint, #freebsd, and #openbsd. Each of these 4 operating systems have their distinct advantages and place. I love the #foss life.
Kudos to all #Debian maintainers and developers, current and past. Only with your help could I ever be able to update the kernel, libc, systemd and a bunch of system libraries, all in a span of three minutes and involving no thinking whatsoever. ❤️
Unlocking a LUKS-encrypted partition via ssh on Debian 12 Bookworm.
The process for setting up ssh-based decryption of a pre-boot LUKS partition on Debian 12 Bookworm is almost the same as with Debian 10/11, but some of the paths have changed.
