#Philippines has accused #ChineseFishermen of destroying the #marine #environment at #ScarboroughShoal, disputed feature controlled by #China’s coast guard in the #SouthChinaSea, calling on #Beijing to open the atoll to international scrutiny.

In a press conference, #PhilippineCoastGuard presented satellite images of #CoralReefs surrounding Scarborough Shoal. Reefs appeared badly scarred, which the PCG said were caused by #Chinese fishermen searching for giant clams.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef hit by record bleaching

> Australia's spectacular Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its worst event on record, the country's reef authority reported on Wednesday (Apr 17).

> Often dubbed the world's largest living structure, the Great Barrier Reef is a 2,300km-long expanse, home to a stunning array of biodiversity including more than 600 types of coral and 1,625 fish species.

On a starry night, four Thai marine biologists scuba dived through shallow waters off an island in the country's south as billions of pink specks floated up from the ocean floor in a spectacle that takes place only once a year. The pink specks were sperm and eggs released by coral. The scientists collected as many samples as...

Widespread Deposition In A Coastal Bay Following Three Major 2017 Hurricanes (Irma, Jose, And Maria) [USVI]

A difference map of Coral Bay, St. John, USVI. The post-storm November 2017 survey was subtracted from the pre-storm August 2017 survey. Deposition is indicated by positive values (green, yellow, orange, red); erosion in negative values (blue). The largest area of deposition (outlined with a black dashed line) is characterized by deposition ranging from 20 to 60 cm. Coral mounds in central Johnson Bay have a general flute mark pattern of deposition toward Coral Harbor and erosion to seaward. Six sediment cores (white circles) were collected in November of 2017.

"South-east forecast to be literally off the scale - Patch of Tasman sea expected to warm over spring and summer to temperatures that risk significant losses to sea life

Australia’s south-east could be in for a marine heatwave that is literally off the scale, raising the prospect of significant losses in fishing and aquaculture.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a patch of the Tasman Sea off Tasmania and Victoria could be at least 2.5C above average from September to February, and it could get hotter.

Oceanographer Grant Smith said the colour-coded scale the bureau uses to map forecast sea surface temperature anomalies stops at 2.5C. “We didn’t account for anomalies that high when we developed this ... it could be 3C, it could be 3.5C, but we can’t see how high it goes,” he said.
...
South-eastern Australia is a known climate change hotspot with its waters warming about four times faster than the global average."

when we lose coral reefs from heat, we lose so much of the ability to clean our air, huge biodiversity and much of our food sources, and half of the world's oxygen.

I don't think people understand what coral reefs do for the environment. People think of trees as air cleaners, but with so little space taken, coral reefs do so much for the earth.

If we don't act fast, we will all die.

"Record ocean heating has invaded Florida with a vengeance.

"Water temperatures in the mid-90s (mid-30s Celsius) are threatening delicate coral reefs, depriving swimmers of cooling dips and adding a bit more ick to the Sunshine State's already oppressive summer weather. Forecasters are warning of temperatures that with humidity will feel like 110 degrees (43 degrees Celsius) by week's end.

"The that baked and for much of the early summer has oozed its way to Florida with sunshine, little to no cooling clouds or rain, but humidity worsened by the hot oceans.

"If that's not enough, Florida is about to get a dose of from Africa's desert that's likely to hurt air quality."
