Sometimes, I ponder installing Windows 11 on my primary machine, even though I don't really like it right now on my secondary. Other times, I'm afraid that it will absolutely destroy my machine because I have so much stuff installed on it. What do you think? Go, or no?

1/ A #Sunday morning thread on #vintageComputing, computers as #programmable, #nostalgia, and #floppydisks .

In her delightful forward to "Floppy Disk Fever: The Curious Afterlives of a Flexible Medium," Lori Emerson describes people visiting he Media Archaeology Lab. She describes the delight - even for people too young to possibly have nostalgia for using floppies - of using those computers and disks.

4/ Let's sit with these thoughts a minute. Aren't we living in an era where there is an effort to stamp out the notion of a general-purpose programmable #computer? Apple would love us to believe that the iPad - filled with hardware every bit capable of being a general-purpose computer - is a device for consumption, one which runs apps written by others, one which actively thwarts efforts to program on it. The home PCs of the 80s were programmable in a way the iPad isn't.

I'm following @beuc's #EHDS #ConsumerDebates online and I still fail to understand this:

Their representative polls found that "the further away from the GP, the less people are willing to share their #HealthData" and yet BEUC concludes that while data use by medical profl's should require #OptIn consent, for secondary use by #BigPharma and #BigTech an #OptOut option is enough. ❓❓❓

BEUC poll conclusions: 1. Respondents are very selective about the health data they are willing to share 2. |t depends on the entity and level of trust with whom they are ready to share health data 3. Respondents want to choose what happens to their health data and they prefer explicit consent 4. Different attitudes towards cross-border sharing of health data

It's mind-boggling how the @EU_Commission rep just says "don't worry, anonymised #medical records are not personal data" while ignoring a decade of #computer #science and de-identification #research.

Screw #BigTech, go to hell digital #monopolies. Not only I am #free from #computer oppression, but I actually immensely enjoy the #software I am using.

I've recently discovered Mr. Matt Lee's amazing YT channel. Each PC he builds is unique and incredibly stunning. Professionally (and beautifully) shot with no words. He also has a unique way of showing the PC’s airflow. Trust me, you’ll dig this.

Love #ProtonMail... hate their setup process on Windows. Needed sighted assistance because OCR completely butchered the password, and now that I have the password right Thunderbird throws an error at me saying that either it, my email, or the configuration are invalid even though it supposedly added an exception in Windows Firewall.

PLACES AVAILABLE on GIRLS INTO COMPUTING remote course next Thursday 4th May 15:45 - 17:15.
In GCSE #Computer Science, boys outnumber girls 4 to 1. Some reasons are a lack of role models, unconscious bias, and a non-inclusive curriculum.

So after about two weeks of being "On" my Virgin modem starts to drop about 5-15% of packets in bursts between 1/4 and 1s long. It is still fast but useless for say audio/video calls.

Load does not matter either to failure rate or onset of failure. Once it starts failing, only a hard reset fixes it (ie, a software "reset" is not a fix). Oh, and replacing the modem did not solve it.

Any techie person got any idea what could possibly be causing this.

So I bought an old on ebay for the grand price of fifty quid.

In case you are in any way interested it's a 'HP DL320 G3' with 1U size.

I'm not sure it's truly , do let me know.

When it arrives I guess I'll know how old it actually is, and I'd love to know what it cost new if there are any fans out there.

Plan to pop on it and see if it can be of use, the start of my very own .

Do you find that leaving it on and plugged in causes any deterioration with the battery?

Quite a few knowledgeable people join in, including someone who had decoded the microcode onto GitHub.
