Effective propaganda demands a captive audience. What happens when media giants decide what is news and what is advertised instead of governments?
Despite Chomsky's disdain for Walter Lippmann, they are both right.
Now, what happens if a grass roots movement arises to circumvent corporate control? Will there be an attempt to destroy these efforts? Threads anyone?

Sometimes a voice reverberates across space and time. Sometimes a voice feels missing somewhere, sometime. Sometimes a voice does both, simultaneously, forever.
"One of the arguments against allowing women to vote in the [US] constitutional debates was it’s unfair to unmarried men because a married man would have two votes: himself and his property. This runs right through American history. It isn’t until 1975 that the Supreme Court officially determined that women are people, peers, who can serve on federal juries."
@strypey Always had huge respect for #Chomsky and much of his geopolitical analysis, but IMHO he has had a fall from grace after #Russia invaded #ukraine .
His world-view seem so often to center around 'Murica bad', so for him to say that "The UN Charter ... bars all the activities that the US carries out" - Really? ALL of it?
This diminishes the worth of his actual good and important work
"Ich kenne das Wort in der englischen Sprache nicht - ich kann es nicht finden -, das auf Menschen zutrifft, die bereit sind, die buchstäbliche Existenz organisierten menschlichen Lebens zu opfern, damit sie ein paar Dollar mehr in ihre prall gefüllten Taschen stecken können.
Das Wort "böse" reicht nicht annähernd aus, um das zu beschreiben.
“There are few genuine conservatives within the U.S. political system, and it is a sign of the intellectual corruption of the age that the honorable term ‘conservatism’ can be appropriated to disguise the advocacy of a powerful, lawless, aggressive and violent state, a welfare state for the rich dedicated to a lunatic form of Keynesian economic intervention that enhances state and private power while mortgaging the country’s future.” — Noam #Chomsky
Now that progressives have won control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court through a statewide election, and have filed suit to put an end to politically gerrymandered districts, guess how the GOP responds?
They threaten to impeach Justice Janet Protasiewicz, using their illegal, gerrymandered supermajority in the legislature to do so.
@georgetakei As I’m sure you’ll know, George, Noam #Chomsky famously argued that the US #RepublicanParty is the most “dangerous organisation in human history” as evidenced by its profound commitment to destroying planet earth.
“Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?” he asked the audience at a Democracy Now! event.
“Not that I’m aware of. Is the Republican organisation - I hesitate to call it a party - committed to that? Overwhelmingly. There isn’t even any question about it.”
If you are teaching about #propaganda in 2023, you should not be using #Chomsky as the authority on propaganda or #disinformation. Plenty still are. This is unwise, not only because he’s been wrong about important world events. His model (led by Ed Herman actually) also just misunderstands what propaganda is, focusing on structural and political economy issues in #journalism in a way that conflates the majority journalism with propaganda (which is a deliberate activity). 1/
At a time when investigative #journalists are under attack, smearing them as mass #propaganda enablers is reinforcing risk to them and seeding a generalized distrust in facts. This kind of environment does not make for brave #journalism. This theory is also stuck in 1989… #Chomsky has no conception of the contemporary #media environment - he urged people to use ‘alternative media’ at a (Image: graffiti on the door of US Capitol after Jan 6) 2/

Turns out, Noam Chomsky, the vatnik chudster we know as the Elderly Putin Apologist, was having dinner on private jets with noted child molesters Woody Allen and Jeffrey Epstein. #chomsky#epstein#pedophile#trafficking
The statement by #chomsky on meeting Woody Allen and Epstein is absolutely spectacular: “If there was a flight, which I doubt, it would have been from Boston to New York, 30 minutes,” Mr. Chomsky said. “I’m unaware of the principle that requires that I inform you about an evening spent with a great artist.”
