NEW PAPER from me and a wonderful team of collaborators: ✨A Street-Specific Analysis of Level of Traffic Stress Trends in Strava Bicycle Ridership and its Implications for Low-Stress Bicycling Routes in Toronto✨
Congratulations to Toronto who elected a mayor who will actually build a better city. It's about time.
The results are particularly interesting for Saunders (8.58%) and Furey (4.95%) who ran openly-hostile campaigns against good urbanism and in particular, bike lanes.
Both candidates made "tearing out the bike lanes" a core pillar of their campaigns.
Let's hope this sends a message to future politicians: anti-urbanism doesn't get you elected in Toronto anymore.
Today's Ride: Some numbskull driving the wrong way down a one way street turns into me at an intersection. I avoid then hoot and holler. They took offense to that and stopped for a CONFRONTATION. I pulled alongside and LET THEM KNOW. They asked "What are you gonna do about it". So I thought of some things and replied "Well, for starters.." and they didn't wait for me to finish my threats and sped off and hit a planter and fucked their car up. #TodaysRide#BikeTO#BikeTooter@fedibikes
Montréal suburb Brossard has a traffic light in a school zone that defaults to red, and only turns green when an attached speed camera detects a car driving under the speed limit.
The light is on a 90-day trial, on a 2-lane residential street. Similar signals are widespread across Europe.
Before it was installed, average vehicle speeds of 40 km/h. But in the past week, average speeds have dropped to 29 km/h.
4-year-old has been asking to go to the beach lately (me: I don't think the beach right now will be what you're expecting but ok!). Today I learned that the bathrooms AND the ice cream stand are open year-round at Woodbine Beach, and yes, you CAN make a sand castle in January. #BikeTooter#BikeTO
Staple-style covered bike racks at the Ontario Science Centre, steps from the entrance, accessible from a beautiful trail ride through the Don Valley. Doesn't get any better than this! #BikeTO #BikeTooter
Oh look, an astroturf org (edited*) is spreading flat-out lies about cycling infrastructure, and they're illegally using the City of Toronto logo to do it.
(I continued this thread as I explored the situation)
original post said "behind I assume Saunders", which I actually meant as Saunders being behind this website. But later posts in the thread include info that makes me think it's really just a bike-hater, not Saunders.
Today's Ride: Some absolutely gorgeous mists on the spit and a few interactions with others. Positive interactions first. I took a break in a park by the lake. There was a family who were taking pics of themselves and the area. Another park user offered to take their picture as a group. They took loads and explained that it was their first day in Canada and it was all in all pleasant to watch. It got better. (multi-part post in the replies) #TodaysRide#BikeTO#BikeTooter#BubblePeople
