An old practice from #AIDS movements that I think we should try out for this pandemic: at the beginning of events, inviting audiences to call out the names of people who aren’t here because of the virus. Covid deaths, long covid, people sick today, immuno-inaccessible events, caregivers, etc. It’s so hidden, people think they don’t know anyone despite the huge numbers.
I haven't taken home a bar souvenir like this in many years. I saw this at Atlanta Eagle tonight and started happy-crying. It's going in my keepsakes. I didn't think I would see this in my lifetime. #HIV#AIDS#vaccine
About 5 mins into the show, they put the #AIDS crisis front and centre. It was such a horrible time. It was the No. 1 killer of people 25-44 throughout the 90s. AZT came out in the late 80s, but it was expensive, had horrible side-effects, and lacked efficacy our modern HIV medications have.
It's interesting to see other aspects of 1990 through the lens of 2024
NEW: The first years of the COVID-19 pandemic are behind us, but an early reckoning is making it clear that we failed to learn from the past and have yet to come to terms with the loss of life and society-wide trauma.
In this episode of "Civic," an epidemiologist shares how a lack of public trust led to unnecessary deaths, AIDS activists discuss the importance of facing trauma and a woman who lost her father to COVID is fighting for a memorial for those who died.
so am using a cane these days after being unable to walk a few steps w/o fatigue or vertigo. am happy as it's what i need to get better from #cancer.
but the excitement of walking to my new oncologist's office, which is at a subway entrance, was squashed by Hochul deploying armed Nat'l Guards in our subways. that means cops are everywhere in the area.
cops kill the disabled at alarming rates. am now a disabled BIPoC.
i came of sexual age during the middle of the #AIDS#pandemic.
had it not been for ACT-UP many of us GenXers would have been dead by now. they FORCED the mainstream to reckon with the virus's devastation and the Reagan and Bush policies that were nothing but #eugenics served over "kinder, gentler" platitudes.
AND YET, i'd cringe when Larry Kramer would talk about USGov's fascist health policies.
Larry, you were right. fascism been here for a long ass while.
“In the earliest days of the AIDS crisis, America ignored the problem, even though people were dropping dead by the thousands.
We’re repeating the mistake now with long COVID. Millions are suffering, but the government has largely turned its back, as new cases emerge with each passing wave.”
@luckytran Just as #AIDS wasn't a 'gay' problem, #Covid is not just affecting the sufferer. #LongCovid is seriously impacting the economy.
Previously intelligent politicians are exhibiting all the signs of cognitive impairment that goes with more than a couple of infections. Antivirals only reduce the severity of symptoms. They don't reduce the damage. #EarlyOnsetDementia
