Paul Waldman notes that the latest exhaustive survey by PRRI of American attitudes about abortion shows that "just 9% of Americans who believe that abortion should be illegal in all cases":
"That 9 percent, the sliver of Americans who want abortion to always be illegal, is not only a minority nationally, it’s a minority in every state, and not just a minority but a tiny minority."
"The truth is that the public is clearly pro-choice, and more important, the Republican Party now represents only that one in ten Americans who want to outlaw abortion completely. Wherever they have the ability to do so, they’re enshrining that tiny minority’s beliefs into law, with devastating consequences. And if they can do it at the national level, they absolutely will."
Phillip Bump notes that despite his claims that Americans widely support the Supreme Court’s ]ruling shifting abortion regulation to the states, polling data (see PRRI’s latest survey) show a majority of Americans support abortion legality across most states, even in states that had the highest levels of support for Trump in 2020.
"The scenes that played out in Florida this week – the overworked nurses, the crammed schedules, the desperate rush – are themselves an indignity, because they represent something that no American should have to endure: the withdrawal of a right that is fundamental to their citizenship. This is what it looks like when life becomes smaller, crueler, and less free. It is an ugly sight."
"While it may come as a surprise to many, most religious groups today favor the legality of abortion. In fact, there are only four (out of 16) religious groups in which a majority say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases: white evangelical Protestants, Hispanic Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Latter-Day Saints. Even combined, these four outlier groups only constitute one in five Americans."
"The truth is that we are not polarized on this issue of abortion—at least not if polarization is construed to mean an evenly divided country. Rather, what we have is a vocal and powerful minority attempting to enshrine their beliefs into law, over the objections of nearly twice as many Americans who disagree with them."
Nothing this man says bears any resemblance to the truth. It's just one absurd lie after another. The idea that #Democrats supported his efforts to criminalize #abortion is patently ridiculous. The only people who supported that bullshit are #Christofascist scoundrels on the far-right. Literally everyone else was vehemently opposed to the move.
Democratic voters are increasingly supportive of abortion rights, and increasingly motivated by the issue, according to a new report from the Public Religion Research Institute.
Abortion has become a key issue in the US elections.
@jeffjarvis. "As expected, she voted to eliminate the constitutional right to abortion."
Thank you for gifting this article. It's columns like this that led me to cancel my #WashingtonPost subscription.
I teach my students the importance of anticipating the counter-argument. In this case, there is no argument after this counter-argument because women are dying because of this vote to take away the right to an #abortion.
From crowded to quiet: Inside a clinic as Florida bans abortions after six weeks.
@19thnews reports: "At A Woman’s Choice in Jacksonville, staffers treated a surge of last-minute patients before the May 1 deadline. Now, they will have to refer most of them out of state."
The vote came after it narrowly cleared the AZ House last wk. The bill is expected to be signed by Gov Katie Hobbs.
The 1864 #law, which predates AZ’s statehood, permits #abortion only to save the patient’s life—& provides NO exceptions for survivors of #rape or #incest.
The law also states the age of consent for a “woman” is 10 yrs.
Monte Francis speaks to Elizabeth Sepper, a law professor at the University of Texas and a nationally recognized scholar of religious liberty, health law, and equality, about #Florida 's ban on most #abortions after six weeks of #pregnancy, which went into effect Wednesday. She says that women across the socio-economic spectrum are going to find that in crisis their lives and #health will be put at risk because of the ban.
“This is a fight for freedom, the fundamental freedom to make decisions about one’s own body & not have their government tell them what they’re supposed to do,” the VP said.
VP #KamalaHarris then pivoted to the meat of her argument to #Florida voters: that #Trump was to blame for the #AbortionBan that just went into effect in the state, as well as others like it nationwide.
“Across our nation, we witnessed a full on assault, state by state, on #ReproductiveFreedom, & understand who is to blame: former president Donald Trump did this,” Harris said.
“Donald #Trump hand picked 3 members of the #UnitedStates#SupremeCourt because he intended for them to overturn #Roe, & as he intended, they did.”
#KamalaHarris harkened back to her grilling, as a senator on the judiciary cmte, of 2 of Trump’s #SCOTUS nominees, saying it was clear after their confirmation that the days of nationwide #abortion#access were numbered:
“& it happened just as Donald #Trump intended. Now, present day because of Donald Trump, more than 20 states have #AbortionBans, more than 20 #TrumpAbortionBans. & today, this very day at the stroke of midnight, another Trump #AbortionBan went into effect here in #Florida. As of this morning, 4 million #women in this state woke up w/fewer reproductive freedoms than they had last night. This is the new reality under a Trump #abortion ban.”
