Cairnholy II chambered tomb, said to be both the grave of King Galdus and of the Bishop of Whithorn, killed in a nearby battle. Galdus has another grave at Torhouse Stone Circle!
Happy Beltane.
On the #BBC: Does #Scotland want its kilted #king. Mmm. As a Scot there are few things that wind me up about the #RoyalFamily as much as Prince Charles or rather #KingCharles as he is now insisting on wearing a #kilt so much in Scotland. It isn't how Scottish people #dress everyday. It isn't something we can relate to or recognise in our experiences. It's playing at #nationality, playing at #culture, playing at dress up. And it's woefully inappropriate and ill judged. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65424929
"Join the UK and Scotland’s digital campaign this Millions Missing"
"We want to flood social media with powerful images that show the reality of life with ME and what people are missing, as well as the loss it also means for carers, families, schools and communities, and ask the question #CanYouSeeMENow?"
The people best placed to govern India or Uganda or Jamaica or Afghanistan or Brunei or Natal or Australia or Ireland or umpteen others are the people who live and work there. This is obvious.
Why then is Scotland supposed to accept rule from London by people we don't vote for? #Scotland #ScottishIndependence
Rough Castle Roman Fort, on one of the best preserved stretches of the Antonine Wall near Falkirk. It's a great place to appreciate what the wall was like: and, just possibly, was the origin of the story of King Arthur’s Camelot. Excavations have been taking place on Dumyat, overlooking Stirling, investigating the ramparts and interiors of a hillfort which may originate over 2500 years ago but was probably also used in the early Historic period.
A collaboration between the local authority archaeologist, with local volunteers, and academics from University of Aberdeen's Northern Picts project, it's a great example of how we collaborate in Scotland to get more done together.
The stills at the fascinating Tomatin Distillery, close to the A9, eighteen miles south of Inverness. This was once the largest distillery in Scotland and it remains an impressive place with some highly unusual features. A magical evening at Front Bay, Monreith. The gable end of the ancient Kirkmaiden church can be seen on the heughs at the end of the beach, back a way from St Medana's Well.
Prehistoric #rockart on the high slopes of the Ballaghbeama Gap, County Kerry, #Ireland. Sometimes called ‘Atlantic Rock Art’, similar designs were carved on rocks from #Portugal to the north of #Scotland. In Ireland, #prehistoric rock art like this probably dates back to the #Neolithic, though it may have been made into the #BronzeAge. Rough estimates would place it then between 3,200-2,000BC.
