Good morning everybody! What are people working on today? Or reading? Or watching? Or hell even thinking about that isn't doom and gloom? :)

At work I'm having a blast building Concourse - https://concourse-ci.org/ meta-pipelines for OpenEdX user retirement workflows. It's been a great education in this rather complex and interesting software ecosystem :)

Later on I want to finish setting up #RetroArch on my #Xbox X. I really love how for $20 you can boot into "Developer Mode" where you get full access to the system. It's not #FLOSS but it's pretty open in a pragmatic kind of way.

I just found out yesterday also that #TIC80 - my favorite "Fantasy Console" runs great there as well. The idea of being able to play my TIC-80 games from the comfort of my couch with the large screen TV and nice controllers? #sweet :)

Anyone here use the Pocket 2+?

I'm trying to find a good CRT shader for to preserve transparency effects (like the waterfalls in Sonic 2) and dithering. The problem is, a lot of shaders that are lightweight enough (easymode, lottes-fast, etc.) don't seem to do the trick, the ones that work well (sonkun, royale) are too heavy for the hardware, and some that might be solid contenders are made for 1080p+ resolutions and create giant, goofy scanlines at 480p.

The are so easy with the lcd-v2-color shaders, but finding a good CRT shader for home console has been tough with this device.

The retroachievements.com integration into #RetroArch on the #MiyooMiniPlus is cool and something I’d love to get into but the online only element to it just puts me off.

I get that it prevents people cheating the achievement unlocks, but I don’t want to feel like "Oh I can't play this game until I get home as I'm trying to 100% the achievements" etc. 😕

Spent a couple hours messing with #Retroarch and I think I've got it more or less figured out. The PS2 core is pretty primitive, think I'll stick to the standalone emulator for those games. Runs #MegaMan Anniversary Collection pretty well tho, that's nice :3 #RetroGaming

Please boost for reach if this kind of stuff interests you. Will post more on this later.

Once upon a time, there was a cool emulator frontend called Retroarch. This emulator wasn't accessible until I and a few other gamers went to them and asked about adding accessibility. An amazing person known as BarryR made it happen. Now, if you turn on accessibility mode in settings, or pass the "--accessibility" (or something like that) flag on the command line, you get spoken menus, including the emulator's pause menu, good for saving states and such. Then, using PIL and other image processing Python utilities, running a server and hooking into Retroarch, the script allowed players to move around the map, battle, talk to NPC's, ETC. The only problem was, no one wanted to test it. The blind gaming community pretty much spoke, saying that we want new games. We want cool new, easy accessibility. So that's what we have no, follow the beacon or get sighted help in the case of diablo and such. It's sad, but meh. It's what we wanted I guess. No Zelda for us. So, this is about as far as he got:

To expand on what devinprater was saying: I am working on an accessibility pack/service for Final Fantasy 1 for the NES (this was what was shown in the latest RetroArch update). The idea is similar to how Pokemon Crystal access works, but it's using the RetroArch AI Service interface to do so.
Right now, the FF1 access service is mostly done, but I need more testers to try it out and give me feedback on how it's working. Right now, you can get up to the point where you get the ship, but there's no code to deal with how the ship moves, so that still needs to be done. Likewise with the airship later on.
The service works the latest version of RetroArch, on linux and mac, but not windows. This is due to how nvda reads out the text and until the next major update to nvda (which will have a feature to fix this), it'll have to wait. If you have those, I (or maybe devinprater) can help you set it up on mac/linux to test out. The package itself is available at: https://ztranslate.net/download/ff1_pac … zip?owner=

@perishthethought You could very easily use #Lutris as a launcher for each game! Just set them up as you were launching a single game from the terminal. As far as a 3rd party GUI goes though, #RetroArch really is the most straight forward yer gonna find. Setting it up is not as huge an undertaking as it first appears. I'd be happy to help you get it configured if you need, just holler.

Remember when cheap, Chinese knock-off consoles were the weird things you saw in markets that were far more likely to catch on fire than provide a decent gaming experience?

Well, erm, that seems to be no longer necessarily the case.

This is the , a Chinese powered handheld that runs to emulate up to PS1 era games.

And it is so well done! The unit feels sturdy, the emulation is mostly solid and the screen is brilliant!

My first hours with the Pocket 2S reminded me how easy setting up a was... Starting from scratch, having to install standalone emulators, doing far more config than any sane human should have to do...

But I finally got there, and ended up withwhat seems like a really nice device. Comfortable to hold, really excellent sticks and triggers, it runs everything up to and really well, and even a few games.

Now to actually play something...

Welp, I have properly installed on my x and it works great! I can run cores that don't require any files.

However I am thus far 0 for 3 in getting my game collection to work :)

I suspect I'll have a much easier time if I get cozy with RetroArch on my desktop computer first so I have a sense for what it's looking for in terms database file matches etc.

It's a learning process, but I'm having fun with it every step of the way so it's all good.

I tried and failed to get #retroAchievements working several times through #retroArch but I could never get it to register #achievements.

I finally just installed the #emulators from RA itself. The #NES and #SNES ones work fine, but I had to map buttons on my #XBox #controller and they don't support filters.

#Batocera has a pretty slick frontend, but it's really rough around the edges, and when something doesn't work it's hard to figure out what to do about it because it's so weird.

Maybe I should just install #Ubuntu and #RetroArch, or just stick with the #Windows install that came with my #BeeLink #NUC.

I tried #RetroArch on the #ipad. The experience is not bad, especially using a Bluetooth controller. But still prefer how this works on #Android; much easier to deal with ROM files, and the screen on my Samsung (OLED) looks better.

Wow, is among the worst software I've ever tried. Unintuitive , ugly UI, hundreds of options, some even feel repetitive.... So I tried, not successfully used though ☝️
And don't get me wrong, I like to fiddle around to find solutions. But if it is not working out of the box for average users after more than one hour mainly try and error, I call it garbage. Is that thing even working at all??
