So @element took part in the European Police Congress in Berlin, had a booth and presentation there, and is proudly posting on the fedi about it.

I’m currently paying them $11.90 a month to host my homeserver on their EMS platform.

My payment in April will have been the last.

It’s one thing to provide FLOSS comms to the government. It’s another to proudly support our fucked up police system.

kkarhan,

@scy @element I KNEW THEY WERE #SUS!

The fact that you see very little presence of the larger cryptocurrency community on the Fediverse shows the actual interest in distributed systems compared to their interest in making money. A large part of the cryptocurrency community are just VCs or wannabe VCs.

#cryptocurrency #ethereum #bitcoin

ceresbzns,

@TheVoyageur
True

I think there's a few factors that explain this:

  1. a lot of crypto people don't really carea bout the values, they just want money, like you said
  2. there's like a half dozen blockchains based social media networks fighting for a very small pie at any given time (bluesky, farcaster, lens) and because network effects are what they are, none are winning against big bird
  3. the really hardcore decentralists (like the #monero crowd) vault right past Mastodon to maximally decentralized and encryptable services like #irc and #Matrix
  4. an existing culture in the broader fediverse that's deeply hostile to crypto

Taken altogether, it makes it seem improbable that we'll see crypto communities congregate in the Fediverse

@hywan I don't know why they're banning this client. is not a vendor-lock-in service, banning would not stop users accessing it. This is different from WhatsApp or others.

People say that having a #DefaultInstance #makes #onboarding easier, but when I first tried #Matrix, I joined their default instance, and the cesspool that was the default instance made me not want to use matrix for months after.

Seems the same thing is happening with .social... Maybe just have a simple wizard to assign people their first instance instead.

The only thing I need DMs on #ActivityPub / #Mastodon for is to tell someone how to get me on #Signal for private communications. Let's not fall into the trap of #featuritis and the "one App for all". ActivityPub/Mastodon is for one to many communication. Shoehorning one-to-one communication to that feels wrong, IMHO @evan

@koen@procolix.social avatar

@jwildeboer @evan the thing is that I would prefer for everyone to use @matrix for that instead of something bolted on to your telephone number. #matrix is so much more #federated and yours than signal.

    There's this attitude that Mastodon does everything perfectly when it comes to combating racism, harassment, and other problems, which I find somewhat strange.

    Mastodon does well, for example, in enabling server level blocks and defederation and the ability to import (hopefully curated) block lists from other users, although the latter functionality is not obvious to many people.

    The number of severs, admins, and moderators also contributes to better human level attention of moderation issues.

    petrescatraian,

    @gwynnion This point applies to just about any social media platform. Do you think Twitter/Instagram DMs are not visible to Twitter or Instagram owners? Or that messages you send in Facebook Messenger are invisible to Meta and it's advertising and data collecting machine? Have we so easily forgotten the entire Cambridge Analytica scandal and how large corporations use the data on the social platforms (including private messages) in order to target you with advertising or social campaigns?

    It's great that you brought this up in discussion, this just shows the need for everyone to jump ship to a trully private, secure and end-to-end encrypted messenger solution.

    There's #Signal which is really easy to set up and use. All you need is a phone number and you're done. #Telegram also encrypts your messages if you use the private chatrooms, and you can also set your phone number to be hidden, and use a user ID instead for searchability. Want even more security and descentralization as well? there is #Matrix and @joinjabber that allow you to pick any server and client of your choosing (Matrix encrypts all your messages by default, on XMPP there is a thing called OMEMO which is server and client (or app) dependent - more details here).

    Or you can just create a #PGP key and encrypt the text you want to send on Mastodon like that.

    I know it all sounds too complicated for the average folk, on one side, but on the other, if we do not understand technology, it's limitations and it's capabilities, we will never get to use it to full potential.

    I put my XMPP address in my profile on this purpose - you can see it if you click on the 3 dots menu while in my profile, then "open original page".

    🤦‍♂️ Great. #Fluffychat is acting super slow when loading a new #Matrix room. I wonder if there's a way I could troubleshoot it quickly because I need to get in contact with #Calckey support to discuss bugs I found.

    @fediversereport Very interesting article about @owncast & @gabek!

    Yeah, streaming content to the masses can be complex & costly, depending on your setup as well as your audience. I think this is where centralized services excel at compared to decentralized ones.

    Even (which I am a fan of) is iffy at this. But I do believe the decentralized streaming services can reach regions that are often overlooked or restricted (like 🇨🇳) which is why they are necessary.

    Let's talk about unrelated to today.

    The prevelance of in .

    is a centralized service with a history of violating the and being generally not friendly.

    In terms of data security, it's messages are comparable to on the - they are always accessible to the admins of the service.

    But still, moderation teams on the use the service for coordination.

    1/n

    csdummi,
    @csdummi@babka.social avatar

    I understand the reason for this - organization and coordination are difficult tasks. And the team responsible for resolving conflicts should not itself be a source of misunderstanding and conflict.

    For this purpose is a very useful, but flawed tool. And alternatives (e.g. , , and ) have their own issues - some are just down to network effects, others actually lack features making them less useful for coordination.

    This is why I don't recommend them here.

    Yo no he podido entender la teoría de la #Matrix que defiende #Musk. Si la realidad es solo un niño jugando #SimEarth ¿Para qué llegar a otros planetas si eso es verdad? De seguro ese es de los objetivos de la simulación y apenas se cumpla se acabará, como en ese juego o en #Civilization.
    En cambio, lo largoplacistamente responsable sería mantener la vida en la tierra lo máximo posible (al menos hasta saber si se puede trascender la simulación).
