#NotMyKing - Peaceful protesters are being arrested in #London right now. The law has been changed this week to allow it. Remember this when you want to protest your Brexit not panning out, or your fear of immigration - because you've just lost those rights, too.
On a boat this morning! The Thames is London’s connection to the global ocean & the reason for the city’s existence. London makes much more sense when seen from the water, even today. Yet Londoners still see the water as an absence rather than a presence - a place where buildings, parks and roads aren’t, rather than a place where the ocean is. And the Thames certainly isn’t dead. Hear more on this radio doc I made a while ago: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0009zcg#Thames#London#water
@helenczerski Intresting & thanks.
I wish the Thames’s banks weren’t shuttered away by the japanese knotweed of investment ‘gold bricks’, stealing the shoreline and reducing our connection to the river. So many wonderful places have be subsumed by money, in return for acres of glass, reflecting our indifference to nature.
On a positive tip, I highly recommend mudlarking, if you have kids. Amazing what you can find.
Today I think I'll post a series (not a thread, for better discoverability) on #UKjazz the #London and related #jazz and fusion/crossover #music scene. These are just my favo(u)rites and not intended to be definitive or anything like that. Right up front I need to shout out my friend @LostReflector who has been a big part of this journey with me.
We start with the mighty Shabaka Hutchings and Sons of Kemet. Just watch it. He's a fucking titan.
Photography capturing the beautiful curves in ceiling of this tunnel located at Mornington Crescent London Underground station. I also enjoy the golden light shining on the tiles at the top of the staircase.
Why, London? Why do this to yourself? It’s a beautifully sunny and pleasant evening, and cycling home almost every street was like this: a stationary car jam. I’m certain that 50% of these drivers could easily have used an e-bike or e-cargo bike, 20% could have been on public transport or walking and 20% of the rest could have been in some sort of mini-EV-van that takes up far less space. And if they were all doing that, there would be enough space for everyone. #traffic#London#bikes
I always enjoy taking photography of empty places that are usually populated. This shot was taken at South Ealing London Underground station around midday, so it was a huge surprise that half the carriage was empty. I had to take a shot.
Cruise's CEO, Kyle Vogt, said today while talking about their robo-death-cars operating 24/7 on San Francisco streets:
"Operating robotaxis in SF has become a litmus test for business viability. If it can work here, there's little doubt it can work just about everywhere,"
Yet as @DrTCombs shows in this video, many road crossings are designed to make pedestrians wait at least that long before getting a walk signal.
This video shows one such crossing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but there are many more intersections like this across North America, Australia, and New Zealand.
@DrTCombs@james@ajsadauskas@fuck_cars@green Spot on. It was very evident when they reconfigured #Sydenham's high street. The consultation was heavy on zebra crossings (pedestrian has priority). What happened The existing one was removed and we have controlled crossings with long lead times.
The justification was it maximised traffic flow essential for TfL buses at a South #London pinch point. Except we have parking bays on both sides when a bus lane would have solved that issue.
