We're currently looking for a new refrigerator because we're renovating our kitchen. The existing built in fridge has been there for the 16 years that we've lived here, and who knows how long before. It's awful: The internal temperature fluctuates between freezing and 8 C and it guzzles electricity - measurement suggests ~500 kWh per year.

For some reason all new built in fridges still have high energy usage, so we're only looking at free-standing models.

Most fridge/freezer combi models are absurdly large. It's a stretch to reach the top shelf inside.

All the A-rated refrigerators are huge and have apps. Linking appliances to the internet is IMO stupid and in any case white goods ought to last longer than mobile phones.

Some of the B rated models are only just behind the 'A's in energy usage but they usually have apps as well.

Then there's the problem of avoiding boycotted brands ( linked to Israel and Russia, and to Russia, to Turkey).

I'm now remembering why I put off doing anything in the kitchen for so long...

Nothing like having a beautiful day ruined by Slack deciding they're going to opt every customer into training their LLM unless you send their customer service an email. I'm so mad at how scummy this is. Now I need to warn effectively every non-technical person I know that they need to send an email (not in the client cause Slack knows people might actually use that).

Testing this flexible solar panel for the electric bakfiets roof, looking at 20-50W realistic rate with sub-optimal exposure and a lot of clouds, it's a 100W panel. With the 1.6lb box it's 5.2lb, probably 10-12lb by the time I have a stiff enough roof mounted, (articulated?) and charging the bike battery. What should I make the roof out of?

Checking heat pump dryer product photos and they are pretty dinky and blurry, but there's a big high quality video showing a lady in a coffee shop "suddenly" remembering she needs to do laundry and firing up the app on her phone.

AI is the new internet of shit, is the new internet of things, is the new "no IT-person who actually knows their shit will let the monster into their private sphere."

...just like we don't do "smart appliances", just like we don't do, ya know, fuckin' printers (unless we absolutely have to), etc, etc, etc.

The problem, for me at least, with AI is not the spoofing, the fraudulence, the dys-humanity of the resulting texts, films, artwork, whatnot. The problem, for me at least, with AI is the dehumanisation of the worker; the making us work harder and more streamlined instead of relieving us.

The problem, for me at least, with AI is that we're feeding a monster that right now, at this very moment, is being used to bomb civilians in conflict zones (e.g. Gaza/Palestine).

Wyze shows customer cameras to the wrong users—again. Imagine if you used these cameras inside, in private, intimate spaces like a bedroom or as a baby cam. This is the third time in three years they’ve had a similar issue; I don’t think I would ever trust Wyze for cameras or anything security related.

They clearly don’t know what they’re doing and do not architect things in a security or privacy conscious way.

When you hit the button, it broadcasts to the house that someone needs help in the upstairs bathroom. It has a genuine use, though: our toddler sometimes needs help in the potty, and this makes it so they don’t have to yell. Plus… Internet of Shit… it was too good to pass up.

IKEA had these on sale for like $6, and despite the #InternetOfShit meme, it’s actually handled entirely locally. Yay, #HomeAssistant and #Zigbee!

Aina yhtä siistiä olla oikeassa: meidän pyykkikonetta ei ole päästetty nettiin, koska en ymmärrä, mitä se siellä tekisi. Ilmeisesti aika paljon? [edit: ”Katsoo pyykkikonepornoa”, totesi parempi puoliskoni lukeman nähtyään, ”...tai Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moonia”] https://mstdn.social/@stux/111732349359436488

kaarne,
@kaarne@ecoevo.social avatar

Oli pyykkikoneen netinkäytössä vakavakin puolensa. Jostain jäänyt mieleen arvio, että yhden gigan siirto veisi noin 220 Wh sähköä. Jos näin on, 3,6 gigaa päivässä tekisi vuodessa 290 kWh. Hinnan voi jokainen laskea sähkösopimuksensa perusteella. Hintaa isompi ongelma on kulutus: pyykkikoneita on koko maassa tai Euroopassa aika monta miljoonaa.

Mä en ainakaan halua yhtäkään uutta tuuli-, aurinko- tai muutakaan voimalaa minnekään pyykkikoneiden netinkäytön takia.
