I updated the faircamp website today, it now includes links to @meljoann's faircamp tutorial blog post, @radiofreefedi's initiative to support artists that can't host sites themselves, a best-effort listing of all known faircamp sites out there (thanks @mxv and others who have collected and pointed me to these and/or are hosting faircamp yourselves!) and a (again best-effort) credit section directly on the website. Thanks everyone for your support and kindness in these busy last days! \o/
RFF hosted #faircamp:
Is a thing. Immediate focus is to onboard artists with no spoons/means to DIY or easily pivot. We have sponsorship for a few artists.
RFF Art House of Terror I Halloween live show:
We are getting back to planning this. Please DM if you have any material specifically fun for that or want to submit a greeting!
Stress:
We are here if you need to talk out any fedi, distribution, promo issues!
huuuuuuuuuuge shout out to @controlfreak and the team of elves @radiofreefedi for getting me a #faircamp site with hosting to replace my now defunct #bandcamp account.
You can check it out here, you can stream and download for free:
Ahoy friends. Another week another 12 existential crises...
With regards to safe, simple, clean and honest place to offer tunes in a non social platform, non shop, we are about to make public our RFF community #faircamp where you can have your own space as an artist for preview, share, embed, download, and requesting sales/donations.
If that suits you, we have a very simple onboarding process tested where you just offer well tagged flac files, possibly even a zip from BC, and that's it.
NB: While it lacks #Bandcamp's bells and whistles it was a very smooth and straightforward process and definitely workable as far as #BandcampAlternatives go.
Setting up your own #Faircamp site, just in case #Bandcamp goes to total shite?
If you're a self-hosting beginner, or just a bit rusty, this new-fangled "static site generator" thing can seem a bit arcane. A lot of manuals assume you know stuff you don't know.
@meljoann and if you do not have the spoons or resource to do this alone, we have a model tested and in place with a few trail blazing radio free fedi artists about to go public where we can help onboard you to your "own" #faircamp we are hosting. We will do the nerd work.
Added bonus, if you aren't already, you could join the RFF station artist community which if we are being a little honest is well RAD.
I don’t know how to feel about the #Bandcamp situation. It certainly doesn’t decrease my disdain for Epic Games, and I’m disgusted by Songtradr’s stance of “supporting the band camp community is our top priority but let’s fire half the staff.”
But what’s the alternative? Isn’t it the only well-known music platform that doesn’t screw over musicians? Are there other places where I can launch a vinyl release for no upfront cost? Control my pricing?
OK, so #FairCamp is terribly clever. It is a #static site generator for quickly creating a simple music streaming/storefront site.
It's somewhat limited in terms of payment supported (liberapay only, if the docs are to be believed) but this is quite clever and simple to figure out.
I had to try it out, so I created a very small test site using one of my early tracks (which is already on both #BandCamp and #InternetArchive) and SCPing it to my #sdf site:
re: our conversation from a few days ago... apparently a bandcamp-like site that is still 100% independent does exist. bc-like in the sense that one can stream and purchase music. the layout isn't that different either. 85% of proceeds to the artist. check it out and let me know what you thing, but it looks promising to me so far.
My ideal #decentralised#Bandcamp alternative would be something like a combination of (I) #Faircamp as a frontend, (II) #Funkwhale as an #Activitypub audio file sharing & profile-following for the backend, and (III) something like #Liberapay or #Comradery to buy albums & financially support musicians.
What with the no-doubt immanent enshittification of #bandcamp I'd like to direct people's attention to projects like #Faircamp by @freebliss and #Funkwhale@funkwhale. While not a drop-in replacements for BC as of yet, I think these are an excellent starting points for an #ethical, #decentralised & healthy #music community.
@mxv
Since #Faircamp has the ability to put a download behind a code (if I'm reading it correctly), would it be possible to just sell Licence Keys on #Gumroad that work for the code and link across to the site, like @m15o does for registration of their projects? @freebliss@funkwhale
