Winter in Australia might be showing what we are in for next in Northern hemisphere: "there were three times as many confirmed Covid-19 cases as influenza cases. And the death rate associated with Covid-19 was about four times as high as for influenza.”

New study shows that unflagged, factual but misleading Facebook posts reduced the intent to receive the #COVID-19 vaccine 46 times more than did false posts flagged by fact-checkers as misinformation, which the authors say points to the need to consider the reach and impact of content rather than just its veracity. 😷Masks have been found to be very protective against the virus that causes , esp. N95:

N95 masks are most effective at slashing the amount emitted by infected people, acc to a new Univ. of MD-led study.

"Duckbill” N95 masks scored highest in the study *measured the exhaled breath of participants who were tested both masked & unmasked to measure comparative outputs of SARS-CoV-2. The inexpensive masks, which have 2 head strps -captured 98% of exhaled virus.

Trial results for longer-lasting Covid vaccines & more news - Next Generation Update 17.

3 sets of trial results: 1 is the first full report of a pancoronavirus vaccine, and it did pretty well, giving developers lots to go on for this ambitious type of vaccine.

18 new preclinical study reports - including another 2 showing intranasal vaccination reduced transmission among animals sharing the same air.

I dunno if anyone will not have heard, but the fancy Cue Health NAAT molecular test, with the handheld gizmo, has been revealed to be a near-fraud. The FDA found that the company implemented non-approved changes to reagent formulations and device firmware post-EUA that will have significantly reduced the test’s accuracy.

In response to the FDA’s letter, the company elected to go out of business.

Don’t use these tests.

This is a long article, an in-depth analysis of the NIH RECOVER research project.

There's a lot of data to absorb. I have not read the whole thing myself yet.

One of the most worrying things about having #covid (which I think I have right now) is cooking.

I can't smell anything and can barely taste anything at the minute, so... is the feta cheese that I am putting in the pasta and pesto dish that I have cooked okay?

It could smell rancid for all I know and I'm just quite happily spooning it to top my meal.

As I've said before, I use the Australian Capital Territory (ACT, home of Canberra) as the canary in the coal mine for COVID-19 in Australia (seems to have the most reliable data).

The number of people in hospital with COVID has more than doubled in a week - highest weekly hospital number since the 1st week of January 2023.

In 2020, the ACT reported 3 COVID deaths. In 2021, 12 COVID deaths. And, to date in 2024, 24 COVID deaths.
