Masto hive mind! A favour to ask...

I'm looking for British artists - ideally from marginal backgrounds, including BIPOC, disabled, working class, queer etc, who work on the environment and climate from an activist perspective. If can think of any names (or if that describes you!) please do let me know.

And boost for visibility please - thank you all kindly

@olimould

If you're including music in whatever this is, you might like my song "All of us"?

(I'd say I was a bit marginalised as an old queer covid-careful person with a slow recovery going on from a year+ of Long Covid - in other ways mostly relatively lucky)

I must say, there is something very pleasing about dancing around to a groove which I myself with my own hands and ears put together :-)

(that is, an in-progress song for my mostly-synth-pop side project Rivelin - not saying that SB couldn't be danced to, in fact I remember Ragen Chastain telling me she was choreographing a dance to my song Heavy Woman, but SB is more known for other facets haha!)

Let's kick off the RFF mini call to action series.

Enthusiastic artists and friends have have already jump started the campaign for sorting another year of RFF infrastructure (~30%).

https://blog.radiofreefedi.net/2024-rff-infrastructure-fund

The community and our services continue to grow. Keeping the RFF tower broadcasting is a force multiplier for helping indie creatives promote their work and connect with support in we hope, a positive community setting for artists and listeners.

New song! or at least pretty new - I wrote it in the middle of last year, and it got its debut at Nottingham Green Fest in the autumn.

One for the crew :-)

"Clean Air Club is a volunteer organization that provides free air purifiers to Chicago artists and touring musicians, so their shows are safer for the artists, audiences, and staff at the venues. The organization was launched in Chicago, but Clean Air Club and its offshoots now provide air purifiers and far-UVC lights to artists & venues in other cities."

Just saw that Karl Wallinger has died - musician known for his band World Party and before that the Waterboys. Sad loss for a lot of people.

I didn't follow World Party overall, but this just reminded me I had this joyful track "Private Revolution" on vinyl. That brings back memories!

A few people bought my music yesterday, and... I would still want to record these songs even if no-one were paying me, but I can't deny it does add a little boost of motivation when people want to give me money :-)

For anyone cruising #BandcampFriday looking for fresh music to listen to... here's a little thread I did over the last month, introducing some of my songs!

Would suit people who enjoy thoughtful words and/or solo bass guitar. One of my favourite reviews from back in the day said that I "make the bass fill the space most people need a band for" :-)

For people new to #BandcampFriday...

On Bandcamp, you can listen to a lot of music for free - but when people do choose to buy something, the musicians get like 80% of the money.

This is way better than e.g. Spotify, where musicians get hardly any of it!

On "Bandcamp Friday", Bandcamp waives its cut, so the musicians get even slightly more than that 80%.

So while it's always a great time to support independent musicians, Bandcamp Friday is even a slightly better time than that :-)

Oh it's Bandcamp Friday again already!

If you like songs & you like bass guitar, you might like my stuff.

Hmm maybe I'll do a thread later if I'm not too busy, with a few words about each of the 11 songs I've got up on Bandcamp so far, so people are more likely to find one they like.

Been neglecting this thread, let's remedy that...

SingleBass,
@SingleBass@musicians.today avatar

Compared to slap bass &/or harmonics, I've not got that many songs using hammering-on. This is the one I most often pick for a live set. A three-minute pop song :-)

@sknob

I just listened and part way through started laughing! Excellent pointy entertainment :-)

I wouldn't say it's exactly the same topic as mine, because mine is specifically about erasing in-betweens whereas yours seems like "certainty regardless of facts" in general, but yes definitely some ground in common :-)

One day years ago, a young person said to me did I have any songs about Palestine? which is where he was from. I didn't then, so I went away & read about the history & eventually I wrote this.

It doesn't seem adequate to the disaster happening right now, but I still think it's valuable to recognise how trauma goes around & comes around, & the roles that "western" countries have played in creating the situation.

How much land

https://single-bass.bandcamp.com/track/how-much-land

#songs #Palestine #Israel #antisemitism

SingleBass,
@SingleBass@musicians.today avatar

Someone was querying my use of the "antisemitism" hashtag in relation to that song, so to clarify: that's there because the song is partly about injustice against Jewish people, going back hundreds of years & hasn't stopped yet. Not implying that antisemitism excuses injustice against Palestinian people, or was the only relevant strand of history... but if you want to understand the whole situation, I don't think you can skip over that aspect.

SingleBass,
@SingleBass@musicians.today avatar

A song about the weight of social/commercial manipulation insinuating that yr not good enough. Yes it is an allusion to the classic fairytale :-)

Ugly Duckling

"In the mirror of the world around you
"Reflections every day show you you're wrong
"Feeling ugly like the Ugly Duckling
"You never realised you were a swan"

"It's time to fly"

SingleBass,
@SingleBass@musicians.today avatar

One more song to go in this little thread of the ones up on Bandcamp so far - and it's the shortest one, only a minute long, about reckoning with the death of someone close.

Out of the game

"Weaving your absence into our lives
"Learning to believe you're gone"
