I was kicked off another Mastodon server for posting support for Israel in a sarcastic post. Oh well.

Right now Loops has a single feed in chronological order, it's not the ideal algorithm but will work for now.
When testing on my friends, they mentioned this, they are used to an algo that is tailored to them and their behaviors (durationViewed, hasLiked, hasShared, hasOpenedCommentDrawer, hasCommented, hasFollowed)
This is the most complicated aspect of Loops, no it isn't the AR filters or Camera, it's the algo and feed.
As an author, I maybe opposed to analysis of my content taking place. But as a viewer I absolutely want that the content I see has been analyzed before - and this is in fact already happening.
It is just (mostly) human labor producing this analysis. The moderators of #babka and any other moderated Fediverse instance are constantly working to analyze the contents of posts from all across the Fediverse and decide whether you or me, as members of #babka, should see them. And in far too many cases they have to decide that some content must not appear on the timelines of #Babka members, delete the post here and perhaps block or silence the author or even author's instance.
This is content analysis and it is crucial for this instance to exist.
People have been trying today to attack the instance's reputation, and my own as well.
The challenge for them is that this is a high moderation server. Calls for violence and harassment (in the rare case they happen) are moderated swiftly.
As for me, my position on the Israel-Hamas war, it hasn't changed:
I deeply worry about the situation in Gaza, the human tragedy there is unimaginable, and the potential for more tragedy is there, and we're seeing it happen. More must be done to address this serious humanitarian crisis.
I also strongly support a ceasefire that includes return hostages and release Gaza from Hamas rule so that they can enjoy free and fair elections.
And lastly, no actions in Israel justify any hate speech against Jews in the diaspora. There are no ifs, ands, or butts about this issue. Using "Because Israel" as a means to discriminate, act violently towards, kill, or spread hate about Jews is hate and should be treated accordingly.

I've pushed support for #Yiddish and #Ladino to my translation server. That means #Babka will now have support for translating from and to those two languages
Just to temper expectations, these models have a BLEU score of 18-25 while typical models score at 40-50 BLEU

Since I don't live in the US anymore, and I didn't celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, I'm turning this Shabbat into a "Shabbat Thanksgiving" with traditional Thanksgiving foods, etc. It's also awfully close to the one year anniversary of Babka Social, which is on Tuesday.
I'm incredibly thankful for you all. It's probably no secret that I've felt pretty burned out more than once. I've certainly had more hate thrown at me in the last year than in my entire life. But it's your care and support that keep me working on this.

I know that I have many non-Zionist friends, and some have expressed frustration about me, and to a lesser extent, the moderation decisions that I may be influencing.
They bring up that being contrary to the popular opinion, especially as it relates to war, should not in itself be seen as an act of antisemitism and that there is a risk of silencing dissent if those who disagree feel discomfort in their disagreement.
I wholeheartedly agree on both counts, and I don't want people to feel uncomfortable to express unpopular opinions- even ones I vehemently disagree with, so long as those opinions don't venture into hate speech.
As it relates to Babka's moderation, I do have power that other moderators (including the lead moderator) doesn't have, and I try my best to address that thoughtfully and carefully.
As it relates to Jewish spaces generally, I'm going to say a few things which everyone reading this probably already knows, but bears repeating anyway.
In the last three days, myself and Babka's incredible moderators have fielded hate speech reports about 90 accounts, across 53 instances.
As far as I can tell, none of them have been acted on by the remote instances. None.
Saying the Fediverse has an antisemitism problem is an extreme understatement. This network systemically hates Jews and treats us differently than other marginalized groups, even when we're the literal victims of terrorism.
Just a question for the Americans in #Babka and beyond. Which consequences can have the destitution of Mc Carthy and presumible paralisis/shutdown if the country in the US foreign policy in the next months?
I am thinking in (but not only) Ukraine, Taiwan, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Morocco... and I am a little concerned. #McCarthy
Doing some searches for #Jewish related hashtags from a throwaway account tonight. Really shows how much effort the #Babka team has done to weed out horrible people for us. The #fediverse is pretty hostile towards #jews and jewish related topics.
