Naomi Novik
Ursula K. LeGuin

@elmyra @bookstodon Naomi Novik and Yoon Ha Lee: I've never read them and they keep showing up in everyone's lists. Gotta fix that!

elmyra,
@elmyra@wandering.shop avatar

@SallyStrange @bookstodon I find Novik a little hit and miss but Spinning Silver is very good and the Scholomance series is a good effort at the genre my friend calls "screw you jk rowling". Yoon Ha Lee is superb.

Terry Pratchett
Brandon Sanderson
Neil Gaiman
Piers Anthony
Brian K. Vaughan

Kieron Gillen
Bryan Lee O'Malley
Matt Fraction

Gosh that was harder than I thought it would be. I felt like using might be cheating but I guess I don't read a ton of longer series otherwise.

@Chip_Unicorn @bookstodon I am gonna boost this with the caveat that although Ferret Steinmetz is a good writer, he has a bad reputation for overt sexism and harassment. It's a damn shame. I really enjoyed 'The Sol Majestic.'

Did you enjoy the read because of the overt sexism and harassment? Asking for Comrade Stalin.

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@firefly @Chip_Unicorn @bookstodon oh hi, you seem nice. No, I enjoyed the read because it was a good story. However given that I have friends who were directly affected by his antics, I have mixed feelings about the prospect of enjoying any more of his writing.

Anything else in "other people's business" I can help you out with?

I don't repeat a lot of authors, but surprisingly there are 10 where I've read at least 5 of their books:

Stephen King (by a mile)
Neil Gaiman
John Grisham
Joe Hill
JK Rowling
George R.R. Martin
James Michener
Malcolm Gladwell
Nathaniel Philbrick
Michael Crichton

This list was a bit of an eye-opener for me. With the exception of Rowling (I read the Harry Potter b4 we knew she was awful), everyone on the list is male and of them, only Gladwell is not white.

Ooh, this is fun! I've been looking at the authors for whom I want to read a whole catalog, but that's hard.

My 10:

Ursula Le Guin
N. K. Jemisin
Martha Wells
Louise Erdrich
Tana French
Flannery O'Connor
Marilynne Robinson
Roddy Doyle
Haruki Murakami

It occurs to me there are some more nonfiction authors in ther too..
Austin Kleon

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@patl @bookstodon very cool. To be clear, it's just a 10 authors thing, they aren't meant to be from any particular genre. That's just my fave.

patl,
@patl@pnw.zone avatar

@SallyStrange @bookstodon Yep, I get it!

Oh! Shoot, here's the way to do this. Here's what @thestorygraph tells me for most-read authors of all time.

  1. James S.A. Corey
  2. Eugene H. Peterson
  3. N.T. Wright
  4. Tana French
  5. Richard Rohr
  6. Haruki Murakami
  7. Henri J.M. Nouwen
  8. Austin Kleon
  9. Richard J. Foster
  10. Charles Reed

I'll have to rerun this for the last few years; the list will be really different and much more fiction-oriented.

I have read too much for this list, but I'll read off the first 10 in Z-A order that I've read at least 5 books from, looking at my account on LibraryThing (which is more complete for SF):

Roger Zelazny
Gene Wolfe
Margaret Weis
Lawrence Watt-Evans
A. E. Van Vogt
Jules Verne
Jack Vance
Leo Tolstoy
JRRT
Steph Swainston
