Thinking about expectations after I came across some negative reviews of The Acolyte. I like it so far … but I also loved the original trilogy.

See, when the 2nd trilogy came out, I felt it was just terrible. (That hasn't changed, everything hinges on Padme falling in love with that little kid, which holy fuck just no.)

The 3rd trilogy I did watch but I found it utterly forgettable. The Filoni shows tend to start out good but then just make everything feel small and mere fan service.

Now, for the first time in a long time, a new #StarWars show comes along that tries to do something different. No empire, no stormtroopers, no known characters, and I have no idea where the show is going. And nobody else seems to know because that time period is uncharted territory so far or something? That's pretty exciting to me!

The last time I felt this excited about a SW story was with Andor (an adult show, no fan service!) and Bioware's original KoTOR (4000 years earlier!). Everything …

Blank slate, kind of! And it showed a universe that has so much room for … well, anything! Because shouldn’t be “Six degrees of Kevin Skywalker”, IMHO. I don't need the origin story of some rando who was in the same cantina as Han back on Tatooine, instead give me some fresh stuff.

Acolyte is enticing because I don't know where it'll end up, lore-wise. Maybe it turns out to be shit, sure, but it's not Formula Disney (yet?).

SW, man. So much potential, yet so much risk-averseness.

😮💰🔥
Star Wars toy sells for $525K.

  • Boba Fett action figure with “rocket-firing” action
  • 1 of only 2 surviving examples
  • Hand-painted version, never-released, deemed a choking hazard

Props to whoever had the foresight to save this all these years.

@pixel Fascinating the things that become wildly collectible. Things you pick up over time, perhaps inadvertently, that suddenly have a massive value.

Watched the second episode of and it is still ok. The second episode was a bit better than the first, enjoyed the alien designs and the city and all that. The story moves forward with every episode so far, compared to this is lightning fast. And I prefer that much more, the show doesn’t keep you hanging, it always solves some plot points and sets up new. I‘d still prefer this whole thing to be a movie, a proper movie, remember those?

@jynersolives

I quit watching movies for some reason, so this format works for me. :crazy:

jynersolives,
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

@stpaultim For me movies just hit different. And especially with Star Wars it's such a big screen event thing. The shows are so-so (Andor and all the animated stuff is good to great, the rest varies wildly for me) and the use of the Volume in most of them makes them all look a bit dull.

First two episodes of #TheAcolyte are a good start. I’m interested in seeing where they take it. #StarWars

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@alessandrolai @brammm Yeah. This has a very different tone. The universe is perhaps more naïve, as compared to the time under the empire.

brammm,
@brammm@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @alessandrolai didn't mind being treated like an adult for once in the Star Wars universe. I loved Andor.

I watched The Acolyte last night, and forgot to share about it here!

Spoiler-free first impressions thread:

• I really like this era. 100 years before Episode III is close enough to the prequels to feel much more like them than anything else, but also, the Jedi are more at their peak than even then.

• So far there have been no references to or appearances of characters or planets that we know besides Coruscant. And I’m okay with this.

Spoiler-free impressions of The Acolyte, continued:

• I don’t think I felt the need/want to explain context or lore to others watching—refreshing after Ahsoka (which I also really enjoyed, to be fair, but for different reasons!)

• Okay yeah we have Nemoidians and Coruscant and Jedi with the Force and lightsabers and hyperspace… it is still 100% Star Wars

• I appreciate that it jives with The High Republic era aesthetically but that’s about it

Spoiler-free impressions of The Acolyte, continued:

• I want more! That’s a good thing. I remember so many people dogged on Andor for starting out slow, but it had to take its time to introduce you to the state of the galaxy, the characters, the motivations. This doesn’t feel as slow-burn (or as deep) as Andor, but just remember the first impressions of that show before you judge this one too hard from its premier. 😉

I watched the first episode of The Acolyte. I’m not sure that this is true . They used safety devices like clips and harnesses! What’s next, railings on catwalks that span weirdly common abysses?

@ericmpaq that’s also slang for “jerks”

ericmpaq,

@Tim_Eagon annoying stupid or foolish person? or an unlikable person? Either way, the Jedi in Star Wars (1977) and ESB were both.

@irina @yurnidiot It does, actually! The guy and his brother (I think) run it only for lunch hours, and it's so busy you have to order ahead. He preps in the morning, cook at lunch, you pick it up. Around 2 they close for the day. They provide a limited range, but what they provide is pretty good! Certainly beats the other lunch places in the vicinity.
