Tomorrow on my usual Monday evening national network radio tech segment, I'll be discussing the absolute mess that #Adobe has gotten itself into over the last few days, as changes to their cloud terms of service triggered massive blowback against those terms in general. I've already seen this being referred to as the "Adobe Apocalypse". I'll also be discussing how these tie in with broader concerns about subscription models and firms taking user content for their AI models, etc.

@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

While is doing an absolute stupid with their new licensing terms, and (now Canva-owned) slashes prices by half in a "flash sale", I am once again asking people to consider supporting tools instead.

Yes, they are far from perfect.

But with a small fraction of what these closed source vendors are raking in, these tools could be made immeasurably better.

And they won't end up bought up and enshittified, as experience with past attempts at doing that to FLOSS tools shows.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@rysiek indeed, is an exemple of how far this model can go, a strong community supporting the devs with money can make all the difference.

catileptic,
@catileptic@chaos.social avatar

@rysiek chipping in to mention i've used Krita (for digital painting), Gimp (for general-purpose processing) and Inkscape (vector art) for digital art and they are pretty good! one can even script automations to deal with repetitive processing.

Seems like a good time for someone to write an article summarizing all the Free Software alternatives to #Adobe's suite...

Graphics people, now is your time. Seize it.

policy updates. If you use their products for confidential projects, this might be worth being on your radar.

Because it's come up in the same conversation - just going to here for my records (and anyone else) this list of alternatives for software.

I don’t understand the outrage over #adobe’s EULA. The new terms are basic boilerplate. Anyone hosting content on the web has the same terms in their EULA.

Am I missing something? Or is this just another hoopla over nothing?

https://9to5mac.com/2024/06/06/change-to-adobe-terms-amp-conditions/

ryanboswell,
@ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

@drahardja definitely a bit of hyper/sensitivity to yet another big cloud platform claiming rights to do whatever with your stuff. Not wrong, but still a lot of feelings about the same basic issue.

But I think on top of that what seems to be a newish common thread is that unless you agree to the terms first, there isn’t actually a way to opt-out and cancel your account. I’ve heard folks say you can’t even use the uninstallation app from Adobe without agreeing. That does seem like a slip up on Adobe’s part, virtually all terms updates I’ve seen usually have something like “you have until X date to opt-out by closing your account” that doesn’t force you to agree first.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@ryanboswell Yes, the “no cancellation until you agree” part is a faux pas on Adobe’s part, and may actually violate some regulations (I’m sure the EU has opinions on this) by holding your data hostage even if you disagree. But I can be convinced that this is corporate dysfunction rather than malice.

@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

The tricky thing about being a company that I don't trust is that even when you try to clarify something you need to be aware that specificity can sound suss.

"Adobe does not train Firefly Gen AI models on customer content."

The way this is worded does not say your content is not used in training AI models, just that it's - SPECIFICALLY - not used to train "Firefly Gen AI models."

https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2024/06/06/clarification-adobe-terms-of-use

BenjaminNelan,
@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

Just say, "Adobe does not train AI models on customer content,"

But now it's like, oh hey, maybe they've trained their Podcast Enhance audio model on user audio files. Maybe they've trained their colour matching or re framing models on user edits.

BenjaminNelan,
@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

Oh - and of course, "Adobe will never assume ownership of a customer's work"

So you grant yourself the mother of all licenses, effectively giving you all the perks of ownership, but hey, you won't 'assume ownership' as a technicality. Well great.

Very odd InDesign/PDF bug:

Font rendering incorrectly in an interactive PDF, but only in Chrome.

Previous PDFs exported from the same file render correctly. Only obvious difference is that the faulty file is PDF version 1.7. and the other 1.5.

You can’t choose the PDF version in Interactive PDF export. However, this was fixed simply by re-saving the PDF in Acrobat (no need to change version). So something tiny is broken in InDesign’s 1.7 pipeline and not in Acrobat’s.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@frankrolf as of yet unpublished client work, but let’s see if I can create a clean demo…

jhilden, (edited )
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@frankrolf this becomes stranger – tried to make a new file, no issue. Tried to make a new file from the affected file (deleted all but one page), also no issue! Nor when making single-page exports of the affected InDesign document.

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

#Adobe used images from #Midjourney to train its “ethical” #AI. Now, it’s using Ansel Adams’ name and artistic style to in its tools. Adobe’s position against using unlicensed works to train LLMs was never one of principle. Rather, it already had access to copyrighted works, so “ethical” was a means to exclude competition while concurrently violating the principle anyway.

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@bretcarmichael @verge I firmly believe at this point that there is no such thing as ethical AI.

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm @verge I’m divided. I think AI is an economic and military imperative. I also think it could deliver societal benefit, like more access to justice (legal resources) by low income people. Crawling knowledge bases is useful, because value accrues to the provider. Separately, art and literally every Gemini result where Google rephrases content from someone’s website — that needs to change. It needs to be explicitly opt-in. All that value accrues to the aggregator.

xeophin,
@xeophin@vis.social avatar

You know what would be nice? Knowing that if you can read/place/open one image file format in one Creative Cloud product, you will be able to work with it in another Adobe Creative Cloud program as well.

Well.

That's not the future we're living in.

CFDS,
@CFDS@vis.social avatar

@xeophin Give Adobe some slack! They're a tiny startup with a tiny budget, we can't expect them to get all the stuff right on the first try 😆

I started aggressive inline skating in the mid-1990s during its heyday and skated regularly through the mid-aughts. The last time I seriously skated was around the time this picture of me was taken in 2006 at an indoor skate park near me. Aggressive inline skating wasn't that popular by then and I was the only inline skater in a park dominated by bikers and skateboarders, which was pretty lonely. The park shut down shortly afterwards and I put my skates away.

There are some FOSS PDF tools out there, but they tend to be fairly single-purpose, whereas Acrobat is more of a Swiss Army knife of PDFs.

"Only" 82 reps today, and I'm not going to do a second or third set. Here are the last four from this set. Last week, I had 95. But I injured my right shoulder last week – tore some muscle fiber in the upper tricep area — and it needs to heal

Shoulder and tricep on the right side are still fucked up. I tried the weekly push-ups cautiously, but I only got to 5 reps and had to give up. It's a depressing setback, but I think it will heal.

nitpicking,
@nitpicking@mstdn.party avatar

@spamless I hurt myself doing core exercises about 8 years ago. I have an old left shoulder injury from a fall in the 1990s that I aggravated by overdoing. I'm still being careful with that one when I do stuff like side planks. I hope you heal fast.
