Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

Source: https://twitter.com/deepfates/status/1787472784106639418

rcriii,

@simon I particularly like this bit:

"I’m a big proponent of LLMs as tools for personal productivity ...

But I’m increasingly of the opinion that sharing unreviewed content that has been artificially generated with other people is rude."

I (rcriii) am not a big proponent of AI, but recognize that some very smart people are, so the distinction between choosing to use AI (perfectly reasonable) versus having it shoved in my face (rude!) helps clarify my thinking.

    @jpmens I agree with you on the reading slides thing, but you lost me on the language point. I am an english speaker. It is my only language (ok, I can order beer and count to 10 in a few others). I am privileged to work in a field where the semi-official language is English. I've been to numerous international conferences where the required language is English. 1/2

    rcriii,

    @jpmens Telling a non English speaker they cannot speak unless they can deliver the talk fluently without reading slides will prevent many (most?) from attending those conferences, which means they will not be visible in the field. 2/2

    Proofreading tip from my former life as a senior engineer then department head. Read your documents in a different form than you prepared them. If you print, print a copy and read before distribution, read it at the printer! If you are paperless, read the document after generating the pdf (or whatever). If all fails, put it away and re-read after lunch/the next day.

    The different form helps you see stuff you missed in libre office/word/spreadsheet.

    From the disconcerting practice of swatting to the dehumanization of political adversaries and the shadowy use of stochastic terror, The Big Picture is uncovering the unsettling truths defining our reality. This isn't fiction; it's a journey into the heart of contemporary politics, and your journey into understanding starts here. 👉 https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/trump-threats-violence-maga-2024

    rcriii,

    @georgetakei These are not unprecedented, plenty of Americans have lived under threat and reality of political violence throughout our history. If he 'ushered' anything in, it is that the violence is being aimed at a new group of people who never worried about it before.

    I know I’ve said this before, but as someone who goes into industrial process environments a lot, the lack in of decent ppe, especially FR gear, that properly and safely fits feminine bodies is a frigging travesty. It’s one of those things that actually leads to a culture of poor safety, because nobody really talks about it - guys typically don’t think about people wearing a bra or hairpins and how they could melt to a person in an industrial accident, and women feel like they have to shut up and be one of the guys. And almost everything that fits better requires a lengthy online order from backstock.

    Anyway if you are planning on working in that space and aren’t a men’s size M-XXL like nearly all the gear, I’m always available to talk.

    rcriii,

    @0xdaeda1a @hacks4pancakes I am giving a talk on safety in January and will definitely discuss this. In our case, we had a mandatory glove policy for several years before one of our employees pointed out that one (or two) sizes don't fit all. Thank you!

    No. I don’t CW actual news unless it’s gory or otherwise extremely disturbing.

    This is why people leave Mastodon, (not me) folks.

    I replied back that I don’t CW news and that they should mute me.

    i have this long term project I've been slowly thinking about for years to figure out how to help folks get more comfortable on the unix command line.

    I have this sense that there are a lot of people who have been using the command line for 5-20 years but still don't really feel at home there

    (not looking for advice, it's just something I'm thinking about)

    some related posts:

    )
    cd $cdFolder
    venv\scripts\activate.ps1
    }

    (I made two since I'm not consistent about env vs venv)

    Last week I was listening to Porcupine Tree, and today I learned what a porcupine tree is.

    When it was a younger tree, a porcupine climbed up 30' (10m) or so and ate the bark. This kills the top of the tree, so the trunk splits around the dead crown. Many years later there is no trace left of the original trunk.
