@MicroWave That's cool. I got the HPV vaccine a few years back (because why not) and I'm glad to hear that it might actually be preventative. It was a "can't hurt, might help" kinda thing. Plus you don't want to spread it to other people.

Okay, so something that been living rent-free in my head today: a woman I know is distraught because she’s 37-years-old and doesn’t think she’ll find a man with small toes.

And small toes are a dealbreaker for her.

But for the life of me… aren’t all toes small? I really am empathetic towards her. I just don’t understand how small a small toe is.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this ideal man has to have big feet and small toes. Size 12 and higher. But this big footed man must have small toes.

Real talk time:

"Just asking questions" is a weapon. We know full-well that some people exploit it to feign innocence when deliberately throwing noise into discussions. And it works in large part because it encourages otherwise earnest discussions which then contribute to the noise.

So be careful.

rbos,
@rbos@mastodon.novylen.net avatar

@TechConnectify You've probably seen it, and I don't want to imply that you haven't, but some people reading this might not have - the Alt-Right Playbook is a good reference for this kind of strategy.

A good starting point that touches on the JAQ thing -

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

rbos,
@rbos@mastodon.novylen.net avatar

@RickiTarr The best part is, humans CAN have tails! It's extremely rare.

Everyone has a vestigial tail in the womb that drops off, too.

The social media sites I've been on:

MASTODON: "You're not cynical enough! We're all going to boil to death because of capitalism!" or "Why don't you love Biden like I do?!"

BLUESKY: "Yeah, we're all going to die. Ho-hum."

"X": [wall of slurs and AI generated text]

FACEBOOK: "You're dead to us since you don't come here anymore."

@gwynnion Maybe I'm in the minority, and I do try to curate my feed, but I've found more optimism here about (eg) climate change than in most places.

We can still minimize the damage. We can prevent collapse. A lot of good progress is happening.

I’m convinced that people don’t dislike AI so much as they dislike AI + The Cloud.

Gamers have been running what is now known as “AI” on their local PCs for a long, long time. It’s partially why Nvidia has become the number one manufacturer for AI cards. Nobody batted an eye until The Cloud became the go-to manner for accessing LLMs and image generation.

And to be honest, The Cloud sucks for AI. It’s a lot of work for terrible results—often censored to fulfil corporate goals as well.

In fact, I’m convinced that all this fear-mongering over AI is an attempt to make it illegal for us to run it on our desktops.

Why, if we did that, civilization would end! It’s better to give Open AI your money so that no one haphazardly triggers the apocalypse.

rbos,
@rbos@mastodon.novylen.net avatar

I've been running tokenized text recognizers on my email server for like 15 years now. Longer. LLMs just sounded like the natural extension of that when I heard about them at first.

Yesterday I asked you all to predict which mode of transportation would have the least CO2 emissions per passenger to get across the water from Vancouver Island to Vancouver. Most of you picked the Catamaran. (https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/@chris/112016093668782869)

Here are the actual numbers assuming 100% capacity. ( in kg of CO2 per person)

Big Traditional BC Ferry Car Ferry (1400ppl): 5.3
Fast Catamaran Passenger Ferry (354ppl): 11.7
Small DHC-2 Beaver Float Plane (6ppl): 9.5

More details in next reply.

Even assuming walk-on, you have to bus to Horseshoe Bay and then bus from Nanaimo to Victoria.

bus/skytrain(downtown)+HA+walk might come out ahead of bus(Horseshoe Bay)+ferry+bus(Victoria).

Various ways you could slice it.

But that said, the enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. I'll cheer them on to the extent that they don't become my enemy. :)

I wish them all the luck engaging with these problems and hope they succeed and become part of the wider federated social media space.

After an hour or so of research trying to figure out how to get a Windows install USB drive made up (with my help), my partner threw her hands up and just asked me to install Mint.

Microsoft makes it REALLY hard to install Windows these days! If it's not preinstalled, it seems like a huge hassle. Used to be you could just flash an ISO onto a CD or flash drive and you'd be good to go.

I've been spoiled at work, with WDS deployment and base images already being handled by central IT.

@Daojoan Yeah, it's one of those invisible technologies that underpins a lot of things. Just because something isn't making a billionaire more billions doesn't mean it's not a success.

The end goal of any technology should be to become invisible. The more attention it takes up, the less successful it is as a technology. One that is always front and centre, one that's constantly novel and interesting, is a failed tech. Good tech is fated to become BORING, eventually.

rbos,
@rbos@mastodon.novylen.net avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi In all seriousness, banning stock buybacks might go a long way toward that. Mass layoffs are often used to free up capital for buybacks.

Stock buybacks are market manipulation, IMO. Dividends already exist, and are taxed more appropriately as income.

I’ve never used smoked turkey legs, they’re not common here. I’m excited to discover why they’re so popular in southern US communities, particularly Black chefs.
