Just sayin’ it’s nice to see one of the big AI players saying out loud what I’ve been saying: generative AI is fundamentally broken and cannot be fixed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@GGMcBG @thomasfuchs Sundar is not an expert at AI. He's a manager. His role essentially is to manage the stock price.

The United Kingdom discovers the Jevons paradox.

As energy efficiency increased throughout the 20th century, so did energy consumption.

@blair_fix I think your graph is drunk.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@blair_fix Also, it can be explained by market efficiencies resulting from higher sales volume, no? Assuming your claim is that efficiency results in more use. I imagine a similar graph can be made for car sales vs fuel efficiency.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@blair_fix I just don't see efficiency as a one way cause of increased consumption, I think they boost each other.

@tjdraper AI in most cases just means "better auto complete" and I think it's pretty useful as that. I use GitHub Copilot and it saves me some boring typing of lists etc.

what do y’all use for taking notes on mac + ios? i’ve been through notes, simplenote, ai writer, obsidian, notion and none worked out for me. either too complex or too simple.

i love markdown, but i don't want to write in any specific syntax — it slows down jotting down stuff. also, lots of apps are janky.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@fox Open unsaved tabs in Sublime. The stuff I want to keep goes into a git repository which I periodically commit and push to GitHub as backup.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@fox For context, I've tried something like 5 specialized note taking apps, but I always come back to Sublime because of the versatility and editing features (multi-line editing, transposing lines up and down). A big downside is that it has no multi-device sync, so I use Google Docs if I need that.
But great thread, I might try a few of the suggestions, thanks.

@saramg Its a measure of prosperity of the rentier class. Literally the less money people who work get, the more money rentiers extract.

it’s hard to describe the feeling of coming back to where you lived most of your life only once a year.

what’s great though is seeing it grow and evolve, seeing new places, parks, coffee shops. you become a visiting explorer after being an inhabitant.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@fox It can go the other way too, like when I visited my former primary school, which was much smaller :)

Google is replacing their search results with AI answers. There’s a very simple explanation for this: it’s better/cheaper to provide potentially wrong answers to keep you clicking within Google than it is to send you away for the right answers. https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/14/24155321/google-search-ai-results-page-gemini-overview

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@IPmonger @eniko I think there are exceptions to the UTC rule, like anything in Polish should just show Polish time, otherwise it would be utterly confusing. Maybe timezone or UTC time on hover. Polish people are not used to timezones.

Contrary to what I read on social media and in the mainstream press, when I think of the average software developer, I don't think of someone "moving fast and breaking things" in a cutting-edge tech start-up. I think of someone working in an established business on legacy systems that end users have come to rely on. Because that's what the vast majority of us actually do. Most software developers are in the distinctly not-cutting-edge business of keeping the proverbial lights on.

pies,
@pies@qoto.org avatar

@jasongorman All projects become either legacy or dead. I think inexperienced devs like to work on greenfield because they think it's easier and have the audacity to think it's possible to do it perfectly :)

@aral We really can't leave good enough alone. Now we need a badge on milk containers that specifies whether the cows were fed actual food or chicken shit? I feel like when I've noticed written on McDonalds packaging for an egg McMuffin "Made with real eggs!" Like wtf would it have been possibly made with instead? What's next, "This food product does not exceed the allowed percentage of rat droppings"?

pies,

@Richard_Littler Because sexual assault on a non-spouse is a sin, whereas being sexually attacked is not a sin, so if he confesses his sins everything is A-OK. Christians, you couldn't make them up.

    @fox I'm saying this because we've only had one female applicant ever (didn't work out), and we're not hostile at least as far as work environment - fully remote, flexible hours (4 hour overlap with business hours, otherwise as you like) sick leave as needed, hardware provided if needed, generous vacation days, holidays off, extra hours (i.e. on call) non mandatory and well paid for. Not sure what else we could do other than explicitly say "female or minority applicants only" which seems wrong and may be illegal.
