I used Shortcuts—for the first time—to build a solution for our Name Mangler users who want to use services to rename files in Finder. We had a solution using Automator, but this one is easier to implement, easier to share, and offers more activation options.

The Shortcuts UI is a weird mix—brilliant in places, mind-numbingly-bizarre in others—but overall, it was relatively easy to get going. (Personally, though, I’m sticking with Keyboard Maestro!)

Hey Canadian nerds! I have held the domain registration for regex.ca for a very long time. When I lived in Canada it was my primary domain, but I haven't used it for years. Does anyone on the fediverse have a good use for it?

I'm going to release it but if you've got a good pitch I'll pay for a 1 year renewal and then transfer it to your ownership.

Please boost for visibility kthx!

My new favorite plugin is Modal Form: a form designer for . It makes it much easier to collect metadata to use in documents. It is especiallly powerful when combined with Templater or QuickAdd plugins.

This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

If you’re a user of our Name Mangler filename renamer, 3.9 is out with much better reporting of non-renamable files. Also, macOS killed our Services feature, but Quick Actions can easily take their place.

It is so fucking insidious how Facebook in particular has tricked business owners into thinking a Facebook page or Instagram is a proper substitution for an actual website. There is a crochet designer I love, but she is ONLY on Meta products, which means I CANNOT SEE YOU BECAUSE I DO NOT GO THERE.

Fucking leaving money on the damned table because you refuse to make an actual site.

Bad business, that.

Question on the PHP glibc vulnerability:

Does anyone know a blog post or other documentation for how to turn off the character set that allows the vulnerability in Ubuntu and Debian?

Here's a good blog post by Rocky Linux on the subject, but I'm not sure how to translate the instructions to Debian and Ubuntu.

@andrewfeeney It feels over-hyped, as PHP security issues often are. 😔

I'm 50/50 on it being an interesting academic vulnerability that affects a very specific configuration and some specific apps, vs it affecting apps like WordPress that try to do magic language handling.

@andrewfeeney Workaround possibly for now >> GLIBC Vulnerability on Servers Serving PHP https://mer.gy/iconvglibcvuln (via Rocky Linux)

"First, let us check if the system has the compromised set, running

iconv -l | grep -E 'CN-?EXT'

If there is no output, the system is safe to this vulnerability."

Else -

Browse to /usr/lib64/gconv/gconv-modules.d

Edit gconv-modules-extra.conf

Go to line 1254 and comment out the following..."

on our ubuntu its a config file not dir:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gconv/gconv-modules

and you must do sudo iconvconfig after to regenerate the cache. then i was able to see the before and after of your test.

I've just added a small Firewall class to Pinkary that uses "matomo-org/device-detector" to determine if a request is from a bot; this prevents incrementing question and profile views in such cases. 🛡️
