I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

(it'll ask you for a billing address but you can enter a fake address if you'd prefer)

I was going to post “the 1000 free copies of How Git Works for folks who can't afford it have all been claimed, I'll release more when we sell 2000 copies"

But then I went to check this morning and we've already sold 2000 copies of the zine??? So I guess we're giving away another 1000 copies now. https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

A cool thing about alt text on Mastodon is that it works with the translation feature. Once you've translated a post the alt text beneath will change to your preferred language also.

So by adding alt text to your images not only are you adding accessibility for visual impairments, you're also adding language accessibility. Neat!

The same post, but now the Mastodon "Translate" button has been clicked and it shows "Translated from Nederlands using DeepL.com". The screenshot is still in Dutch, but now the alt text is translated into English, revealing that the article was about solar panels.

i waited for over 12 years for artist Lyndal Osborne’s handcrafted imaginary bio organisms to come back to the Alberta Gallery of Art, and they finally did. she taught at UofA, and her works always give expression to the oceanic palette of her childhood home in NSW, Aus.

this exhibit is composed of handmade seeds, blown up 10000x their size, as if through a microscope

if you happen to be in edmonton, drop by the AGA to see this piece - it is up on the third floor.

The author’s direct observations at USC, backed up by national study: “With few exceptions, the encampments have been overwhelmingly peaceful, well-organized microsocieties.” “The image of a lawless, violent, antisemitic pro-Palestinian mob stands completely at odds with the reality.”

But people •were• violence at USC. Who?

inthehands,
@inthehands@hachyderm.io avatar

Just in case it’s not obvious: there is another way. And it’s the obvious one.

There was no violence at the college where I teach. There was a multi-day occupation of a campus building in support of Palestine and in support of peace — but no police, no violence. Why?

Because the administration actually •talked• to the protestors, while publicly defending their first amendment rights. They worked together on a specific plan of action, and the occupation ended. That’s it. The one weird trick.

I do some work that involves one-time emailing people from my domain about a service they applied for. I use a lot of form letters. I am continually battling with my email hosting provider about the content of these emails, they reject them to b/c they look too spammy.

I get that spam is a scourge and I sympathize, but it's wild how much of a dark art spam fighting is. So far I've had to remove my "hello" greeting and add a fake unsub link (they're not subscribed) just to send outgoing emails.

jessamyn,
@jessamyn@glammr.us avatar

More to the point--and I swear I am not being a grumpy "I hate change and learning technology" person, I love a challenge--all the time I take trying to learn the shifting spam rules and testing new variants of my email, is time being taken away from my work helping folks.

So either the volunteer work takes more of my time, or I have less overall time available for helping people. As I've said in the past, economies of scale for corporations easily become "economies of hassle" for individuals.

As if the prospect of a “programming language conference” wasn't unpalatable enough – three days in a foul conference centre surrounded by the socially anxious and/or inept – having to suffer through a load of angry men in their forties screaming about masks is, I think, the final nail in the coffin. I'm going to start a programming language forest camp instead. A local duck has kindly agreed to talk about recent advances in practical approaches to substructural typing, so it’s got legs I think.

She may wish to show me the rock tool she keeps in her chest pouch, though.
