@NatureMC Meanwhile, my dog and my aunt's dog had a blast today racing around her living room, entertaining the entire family. She even fed them both a special Christmas treat and my poor, dog-deprived cousins got all the cuddles. In short, everyone had a good time.

So, I was part of a panel discussing Nature and the Law yesterday with Professor Salomé Voegelin (who is awesome, by the way, go have a look at her work). Halfway through the evening she said that in her opinion, we as a society are already in a palliative phase. I'm not sure she's right, but isn't that a terrifying and depressing idea?

Just talked to my Mum. The hospital where she worked for what feels like forever and is still helping out a few days a month even though she's now retired, is bankrupt. They are going to close some of their wards and move others to other hospitals, and probably fire some of their staff. Explain to me why we are using tax money to save banks, but not hospitals...?

You know what's really frustrating about writing a dissertation on legal protections for biodiversity? Reading sensible proposals on how to get there written by clever and concerned people years before my birth and realizing that none of them have been implemented.

I'm really glad for the years I spent in the foreign service, learning how to politely phrase my frustration. Otherwise, my defensio would be one long, ear-splitting scream of helpless rage.

#Academia is full of people who say the system sucks and then they get into positions of power and prove it.

    franzi,

@davidho I'm afraid that's not just the case for academia...

Visiting family, and the current book they are reading is "False Alarm". Lovely. So I had to spend most of dinner debunking Bjorn fucking Lomborg, mostly by reading aloud from the IPCC's AR6 and various articles of people who have bothered to go through his miserable books with a fine comb and pointed out all the bullshit (thank you, btw).

The ’s is perturbed by activites. One of the easiest things to do towards is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to , using only low- travel means such as .

    franzi,

@AlexSanterne @StayGrounded_net Congratulations! I made the same decision 5 years ago, after returning to Germany from the US. Feels good, doesn't it? Even if it's sometimes annoying and complicated to get places, I've found that one always gets there, somehow.

Breaking: Natural intelligence solves problems in a similar way to artificial intelligence made to mimic natural intelligence. 🙄

    franzi,

@davidho Wonderful, now can we please allocate the funds used to develop AI to protecting birds? They are far less likely to one day murder us, even though they'd have much better reasons to do so, given our shared history.

First frost last night. The morning walk was rather lovely.
I said goodbye to the tomato plants, put the crocosmia to rest in the basement and carried all the temperamental exotics to their winter homes inside. I hope they'll survive.

My cat is great at catching spiders. There are however a few caveats:

    1. Spiders must be sufficiently enormous to be fun. Somewhere between “Oh lawd he coming” and Shelob.

    2. Spider catching only happens at night, and only in the bedroom.

    3. Cat will make a few chirping noises to alert us that a spider is being hunted.

    4. All spiders must be delivered as gifts onto the chest or face of one of us.

    5. Note I only said great at ‘catching’. Delivered spiders are very much alive and very fucking irate about the current state of affairs.

    franzi,

@SecurityWriter I had a cat in Morocco who loved to hunt large cockroaches at night. I used to find them dead on the kitchen floor in the morning. He was very efficient, though - it is quite difficult to kill a cockroach without the use of a flamethrower or other forms of excessive violence.

I noticed this poster in a local shop's window. I guess it is nice that they are trying to do.....something?

From what I've seen since my Autism enlightenment, the @actuallyautistic community doesn't much like the puzzle piece imagery, so this is a bit like a restaurant saying they are Vegan aware while using an image of an abattoir

    franzi,

@edross @actuallyautistic What's the problem with the puzzle piece? Is it in some way offensive?

    franzi,

@kaosk @edross @actuallyautistic That makes sense. Thank you for explaining!

@compost I am thinking about buying a stacked wurm composter for garden "waste". But in the description they say that you will have one finished stack with earth every 3 month. This sounds like a quite small amount. We have 3 "compost heaps" in our garden, which cover 3,5m². Only a small amount of our garden waste could go into the wurm composter. Is a wurm composter a good idea, then?
    What are your track records?

    franzi,

@lenahallesaale @compost I have an indoor worm box from wurmkiste.at and I'm quite happy with it. The yield isn't that great, because it is fairly small, but it's very low maintenance and even looks nice. You could also try in-bed worm composting, if you have the space. My main constraint is raw materials for composting, but I'm planning to get my neighbors to help.

    franzi,

@CorvidCrone @plants Flora incognita. That one is Germany-specific, though. I like the citizen science aspect and it is really quite good at identifying common plants. It has trouble with exotics and most grasses, but that's to be expected. I like using it for a tentative ID and then checking my books once I'm home.

There is also an app to go with the Flora Helvetica, which is cheaper and easier to carry around than the (excellent) book. Still expensive, though.

Uhmm - not actually the Gulf Stream but the AMOC. Imprecise wording. The AMOC contributes about 15 million cubic meters per second to the Gulf Stream, the latter totals 90 million. However, the AMOC delivers the bulk of the heat transport to the north, so it is what seriously matters to climate.
Full explanation what I think about the new study here: https://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2023/07/what-is-happening-in-the-atlantic-ocean-to-the-amoc/
