It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits everyone

The Times is found out and criticized for its petulant, unethical use of news columns to punish Joe Biden for not giving A.G. an interview. What does it do? Engage in self-reflection? Ha! It doubles down, whining about Biden. The Times is broken.

NASA recovered a space probe's 47-year-old computer with about as much memory as my old Commodore 64 over a distance of 15 billion miles so it can (hopefully) continue to do science work, and it reminds me of how much ingenuity used to go into computers back when the assumption was you couldn't consume the water and electricity of a small nation just to power Ask Jeeves.

Fun General Relativity fact: Local spacetime is curved towards the center of the Earth by the Earth's mass, but the body of the planet resists compression via the electromagnetic repulsion of atoms. That repulsion also pushes you, like the ground you stand on, away from the path you'd follow otherwise. This pushing is accelerating you, and you feel it just like you feel acceleration in an elevator. This equivalence was a key insight of Einstein’s. 1 / 2

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

“But how can I be accelerating? I'm standing still!”

If you’re in a closed elevator it also looks like you're standing still, but you still feel the acceleration. In the case of gravity, the fact that you have to accelerate to stand still relative to the center of the Earth is a consequence of spacetime being curved.

I certainly never grew out of it, despite practicing conversion therapy on myself for 30+ years. I told people I was a girl when I was 4 (in 1961!) and that I wanted to be a girl when I was 8. There was zero support for trans kids and barely any for adults. Trans people were uniformly monstered and I did all I could to banish that aspect of myself. It didn't work, of course.

If gender-affirming care had been available then I would have asked for it.

So night terrors, sleep paralysis etc. seem to be a real thing. I've had "bad dreams" but never anything that sounds like these experiences. It sounds like it's scary. Scary like when you are home alone and hear a sound and don't know what it is.

I'm curious if people who can have this are can be aware that it's not real when it's happening.

When I get anxious I can also know "this is just that thing" and I'm sort of detached about it?

Can that happen with fear?

dgoldsmith, (edited )
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird I've had this happen exactly once, and I recognized it immediately when it did. I didn't see anything but there was a feeling of a kind of malign presence at the foot of the bed. I wake up really quickly so it passed within seconds. It was discomfiting but I wasn't truly frightened. Knowing what it was definitely helped.

This effort started several months ago and we already did some preliminary work, but this will be a big feature for our next 4.4 version. This funding will cover the ActivityPub work, as well as backend, web frontend and official mobile app implementation.

A friend of mine was lucky enough to take this remarkable photo of the recent solar eclipse, in which a plane had left a contrail below the eclipse. She was wondering though why the portion of the contrail that was in the path of the eclipse appeared curved. My initial guess was that it was some sort of refractive effect, but why would the refractive index of the air be so much different inside the shadow of the eclipse than outside of it? With only a few minutes of eclipse I doubt that there would be a significant temperature change. Anyway, any theories would be welcome!

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@tao @futurebird It's not:

  1. An optical illusion: I held a straight edge against the image and the effect is real
  2. Temperature differences or refraction: the Moon's shadow on the ground is over a hundred miles wide and given the geometry the plane and its contrail are entirely within it. The affected portion of the contrail is at most a few hundred feet long.
    It's entirely possibly it's just a coincidental air current. That’s not as unlikely as people might think.
