Bicycles are transportation. Enjoy stories in many formats. Comic books and animation (2d, 3d, & stop motion) are favorite mediums. Former academic library staff. Enjoy most organizations that sees value in objects and works. Accession is an important step before curating and archiving.

I believe in Diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What is the best piece of advice you ever got?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

Just because someone asks you a question doesn't mean you're obligated to answer.

Sometimes there are consequences to not answering, but discovering that I generally didn't have to engage with people I didn't want to engage with was so freeing.

These quoted conservative people could have benefitted greatly from the very textbooks they're complaining about. Because they sound like idiots.

Previous toot of mine:

The sheer number of changes over 3 decades. It's even faster now. Also mobile phones and the huge change year for them (2009) and TV to digital.

6 physical changes to pay.

12 changes to communicate.

And I'm GenX with the analog to digital bridge experience. It's gotta be difficult for people older than me to even try to keep up.

That kids today are starting to be into analog formats is weird to me. But it makes sense if all they've known is digital.

What is a popular artist or band that you think gets unfairly criticized?

My pick is Miley Cyrus, despite growing up a Disney kid with celebrity parents, living under a media microscope, and being skewed by basically everyone for showing human sexuality, she's seemed to turn out alright, and if you're going to tell me she can't sing, you're a liar.

@RickiTarr

Taylor Swift.

I'm not really a fan (there's one older song I like). I think she's extremely talented.

Most criticisms of her tell me more about the person doing the criticizing.

Like those who criticized Lizzo for playing a historic flute. The criticisms weren't really about the flute or Lizzo at all.

So much projection.

My dad, a dr., was an award-winning photographer, but would never take money for his work. He got his photos in National Geographic calendar and other places, won contests, etc, but wouldn’t take a dime.

I’m going through his photos (he took, developed them himself, start to finish), have to get rid of a ton bc we can’t take them to Canada, 100s of mounted 11x14s. I’ll share some soon.

& if you’re very very good, I’ll also share a pic of me at 19 that he took in London. 😊 Maybe even more.

I hate that no #GLAM saw the value in archiving them. 😞

cainmark,

@GottaLaff

I mean, just for #history purpose I'd believe them to be important.

I'd suggest archive.org since they started saving some physical materials, but I'm pretty sure you've already done that.

cainmark, to cycling
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

Without referring to anything else, Hollywood car-brain strikes again in the movie "No Hard Feelings". Rollerblades made fun of as a form of transportation, a bicycle seen as a low social status transportation device. Trains dismissed as taking too long.

I would like to see a film where main characters use bicycles, they could even be electric, used as transportation as a matter-of-course, not a character shortcut or a plot point.

I don't know if others are experiencing this, but it feels to me like when you post something actually asking for answers (esp when it's from folks with certain expertise), you get a lot of answers that seem like the respondent hasn't seen the other replies to the toot already.

This happened to some extent on the birdsite, but it seems more common here. I feel its because conversational threading doesn't work as well on most instances - do you experience this?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr @glightly

This is also why some people don't see harassment and when the original poster has had enough and vents, a lot of replies are about confusion or unintentional extra harassment of denying what the original poster experienced.

I followed film and TV director Lexi Alexander and saw none of the harassment she got. It was so bad she left. It was real, but I never saw any of it.

I don't want to see jerks on my timeline, but I'm not going to deny someone their experience.

What is a movie that has meant something different to you when you've watched it in different phases of your life? Details appreciated!

cainmark, (edited )
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

"Jason and the Argonauts"

Fun fantasy as a kid.

Stop-motion animation blows me away as an adult doing my own attempts at stop-motion scenes.

Later, appreciation of how really good actors can make you believe in the fantastic.

Very brief period of "Hey, they can do the skeletons with CGI now!"

Then realizing after the 2001 "The Mummy Returns" that CGI can be cool, but never as neat as stop-motion to me, especially when it isn't "motion blurred". I like the otherworldly effect.

Walk and bicycle more instead of driving.

Eat less meat, especially red, if you can't give it up completely.

If you restarted your life from scratch, would you end up in the same place? Would you change anything, if so what, if not why?

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

Same place, just a bit of a different path.

Only things I would change:

Never ask my who-I-thought-was-my-best-friend if my crush liked me back. Disaster on multiple levels that continued for years.

Be more aware of gender fluidity and realize a lot of what I went through wasn't about me at all, but girls and boys and women and men figuring out they weren't as straight as I was.

Go into pure illustration instead of graphic arts. The timing of the computer revolution hit badly.

Alright, I feel like I'm about to step on a landmine here, because this is something with a lot of differing opinions, but it's something I've been thinking about, and the more ideas and opinions I get from people the more I feel like I can understand something. So, here goes...

Also forgive me if I don't phrase this well:

What extent do you think people and society in general should compromise or bend on people's traumas, disorders, disabilities, or Neurodivergence? Examples in your own life or lives of friends, family, or spouses are welcome and encouraged.

I understand this can be a fraught issue, but please kind, name calling is not okay. If none of this touches your life (although I'm assuming this would be pretty rare) this might be a good time to listen before you speak.

Glad facing your fears worked for you.

Sometimes it takes a lot more than you think to figure out what's actually going on.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

If ADA regulations were enforced and followed everywhere, physical spaces would be better for everyone.

The trauma part is really hard. Because a lot of people deny they even have trauma.

I come from a "Everything's fine" family, and it took me decades to unmask the passive aggressiveness.

My wife came from a shout, curse, name-call loudly family. That hugged and showed love in their actions, despite what they said.

I didn't know what to adress as problems, she did.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

There are often competing goals that makes some of this difficult.

Years ago, restaurants removed plants and raised the ceilings to make sound echo and make it sound more exciting for their business. But the "fern bars" allowed people to sit and have quiet conversations. From a business perspective you want tables switched out often, from an individual perspective you want to spend more time with your friends.

Two valid, but competing goals. Ideally both should exist.

cainmark,
@cainmark@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr

I'm pretty sure I was a lot of women's worst date. I was a clingy "nice guy" who couldn't let go unless I was told "no", which I never was, which made me think there was always a chance. Early Gen-X, so some of the maladaptive behaviors I was taught as being good things (watch how most men treat women in 1940s to 1960s movies & TV). Not acceptable, I learned

I've since learned there are violent asshats who don't respond well to being told "no" and they were protecting themselves.

Useless and inefficient skill I am nevertheless glad to have and know how to use: peeling an entire apple with a pocket knife, while maintaining a single spiral peel.
