New bike day, who dis?

Thanks to Specialized’s 40% off existing stock sale, I was able to buy much more bike than I’d hoped! First impressions: light, fast, plush. Can’t wait to take it on something more challenging.

@timrichards This is very interesting. I’ve visited five of the places on the list and was most recently in Prague. Even in the low season, it was absolutely shoulder-to-shoulder tourists.

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@timrichards It was beautiful and we were there for five days. We learned to venture into the really touristy parts in the off-hours and explore a lot of the other things the city had to offer. I get the feeling most tourists there (and everywhere else?) spend a very short time hitting the top three tourist sites in a very cursory manner to say they’ve been to a place. “Five countries in six days!” Umm no.

Aha! Found a secret bike path(paved) on Google Maps! Goes past a significant traffic area... most of the path is unmarked but visible in satellite photos. Will have to go there and see where it connects to things.

In the past two weeks, two senior managers at different companies have told me they're now filtering/auto-rejecting job applicant CVs that contain the word crypto.

I get it, but it's not great news for anyone with a tech #security background that includes cryptography.

@woodpunk Or cryptozoologists. Not sure how much of an issue that is tbh.

I bought art! This is "Poler" by the inimitable Kathleen Neeley. Poler is a linocut hand printed on ~10”x14” 30gsm kitakata paper. This is a second edition of 23 pieces. As a professional framer, I already have a molding in mind for Poler. I will likely float it, but maybe since it doesn't have deckled edges, I'll mat it under two reverse bevel mats separated by 3/16" foamcore. And I will likely splurged and use museum glass and I don't even use museum glass on my own work!

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@elaterite This is awesomely cool! I separately love the geeky detail on your framing plans. Makes me wonder if I’m being too boring with the print I bought in Prague last month. Maybe I should pick your brain ;-)

Future cargo trailer hauling MTB... if I can get it back up to speed. But now it has shiny stickers (but no tires... yet... since the online retailer I purchased the new tires from apparently sends their packages by mule train).

Same mountain bike, still with rotted tires, but now has blindly yellow white and black reflective stickers

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr @LabSpokane @HayiWena @bud_t +1 on the platform pedals with screws. But if you’re just doing this as a cargo bike, you can just take off the pedal clips and you’ll have a nice metal platform pedal. It would match the retro aspects of the base bike too.

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr @LabSpokane @HayiWena @bud_t No, I’m calling your bike old. No one uses mini-canti brakes or bar ends anymore. Thing’s probably got 26” wheels on it ;-)

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@HayiWena @ai6yr @LabSpokane @bud_t It’s a steel frame. I doubt weight is a major concern. That said, I recently upgraded from basic SPD clips to Chester-clones and it’s really improved my riding.

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr @HayiWena @LabSpokane @bud_t A bit more than that, but they also have shocks and brakes and can be ridden on mountains.

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr Depends how tall you are, I guess. I’m 6’2 and tend to straddle the line between size L and XL bikes. I ride with several people significantly taller than me and there is a builder down the street for me who does custom bikes for NBA players.

I gave up on mountain biking back in the mid-2000s, but modern hydraulic disk brakes, front shocks, and the 29” wheels that have become standard forgive a lot of sins.

Engineers have been studying the possibility of space-based solar power for decades, and it's always mostly science fiction because of the high launch costs and challenges in transmitting power to Earth. But another idea is to use space-based reflectors that target solar energy collectors on Earth as they fly over. These would extend the useful operating time of the solar plants without needing to convert and beam the power to Earth.

https://theconversation.com/reflectors-in-space-could-make-solar-farms-on-earth-work-for-longer-every-day-220554

c_dan4th,
@c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

@fraser I’ve never understood how space-based/beamed solar power is considered a profitable idea. Terrestrial [thing] is always easier and cheaper than Space [thing]. Yes, ground-based solar is at best 50% efficient, but panels are so cheap these days. Transmission lines are expensive and lossy, but not as expensive (or lossy) as beamed power.

    This is kind of the opposite of the #yarnuary travel for yarn prompt: I'm really hoping that this llama I was given by a friend last year, who now lives on my farm, will give me some hyperlocal wool when it's finally warm enough to shear him in May.

    I've never processed raw wool or spun wool, but I'm willing to learn in order to make a sweater from grass that I grew!

    Any tips on processing raw wool? Anyone have experience with llama wool, specifically?

    c_dan4th,
    @c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

    @sundogplanets My folks raise sheep, sheer, clean, card, and spin the wool, so I know you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. But I have one of those made-from-the-grass up sweaters and it’s awesome.

    @ai6yr The stories my parents (northern NH) are sharing are wild. Their farm pond was briefly connected to the river half a mile away. They are safe and well though and being glad they have solar power and plenty of firewood and canned goods.

    @ai6yr They are also glad that the back road they live on is connected to the main road (upon which are all the grocery stores, etc), by two bridges, because one of the bridges is missing big chunks of concrete from the road deck now.
