    I discovered my limits today. I’m a reasonably good skier and experienced mountaineer, but ’s East Wall routes proved too much for me today. It was humbling, but, in the end, I think a mature decision to back off and walk back down. I am a good enough skier but the risk/reward value for this was just too high.

    Trivia time!

    #opcOnThisDay in 2018, we spent the day exploring southern #Arizona, locating a bunch of these concrete foundations we had stumbled on via satellite view.

    Any guesses as to what they are, and why there are so many of them scattered around?

    @scott @jbh @j258853 @Mollarom @mattsroadtrip Like I said, ground control points. We use automated ground control points now (highway intersections, runways, anything easily localized), but back in the day aircraft and satellite photogrammetry used big stuff like this.

    @ai6yr @JohnFisher What you’re describing is Change Detection and it’s incredibly hard for all those reasons: pixel alignment, weather, lighting changes, seasonality, look angles, etc. What we in the business worry about is persistent change detection (something big was there and now isn’t or vice versa). It’s easy enough with big things like roads or lakes, possible with buildings, but smaller than that is in the noise.

    c_dan4th,
    @c_dan4th@mstdn.social avatar

    @ai6yr @JohnFisher A bit more on this (I used to work in this field), it’s something that machine learning actually can make easier; classify images into different kinds of landcover, building footprints, roads, etc. Then it’s easier (or maybe “easier”) to tell when the labels for an area change rather than the actual pixels. Again, you need a lot of very good quality data to do it right, like at least five shots before and after any change you want to detect.
