@elaterite Maybe? I don’t actually recall. Do you remember a common name for it? I took them on this route to hit a few things that I hadn’t seen before, but I don’t recall their names (including the restored kiva)

What's this boring looking thing? It's anything but boring, although its mission is like watching grass grow until it's hit by an ultrahigh energy cosmic ray! This is an element of the Telescope Array Cosmic Observatory west of Delta, Utah. It's one of 507 scintillator detectors that are spread across ~270^2 miles. Since 2008, 30 ultra-high-energy cosmic particles have been detected. Thus far, there's no explanation for their extreme energy or their origin.

@elaterite interesting!

Oooh, Delta? Did you get a chance to visit Topaz?

@Craigp Interesting! I sorta wonder how many off these 1930s bridges there are over the Brazos, or even along this highway.

scott,
@scott@onephoto.club avatar

@Craigp haha, really? That’s great. Pretty fun that they went to such trouble to recreate it.

One of my favorite things is the glow of a campfire. Here’s a shot from our fav dispersed site, which sits on the edge of the Mogollon Rim a couple hours north of Phoenix—a welcomed summer retreat. 📷

One of the best things about old skool pre-Elon twitter was its weekly twitter chats.

My fav was #ParkChat (eg #nationalparks #publiclands). A weekly host asks one question prompt every 5 mins for an hour, and participants respond with their own answers using the hashtag. Conversation ensues.

I’ve generally abandoned my account there, but have agreed to host one last time this Weds 3/27 at 6pm PDT to celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

If I posted each question here too, would you participate?

Trivia time!

in 2018, we spent the day exploring southern , locating a bunch of these concrete foundations we had stumbled on via satellite view.

Any guesses as to what they are, and why there are so many of them scattered around?

Abandoned concrete foundations in a desert landscape with power lines and mountains in the distance.

Hint: they’re arranged in a regular grid, extending more than a dozen miles by a dozen miles.

Locally, they’re known as “Corona Targets,” (referencing an old spy satellite program)…but that doesn’t seem to be their actual purpose:

If you find yourself near Casa Grande, Arizona and want to check one out, the easiest one can be found just a bit north of the eastbound on-ramp on I-10 at Sunland Gin Road (32.807584, -111.670413)

2019 was such a great year for wildflowers! we enjoyed several great blooms in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park after meeting up with some nomadic friends who were passing through.

In 2018, I finally made it out to the Racetrack in Death Valley National Park to see the “sailing stones.” I first remember reading about the bizarre phenomenon as a kid and it immediately went on my bucket list, so it was great to finally make it there.

It seems like the mystery of these moving rocks has finally been solved, though: https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/the-racetrack.htm. Yay science!

@elaterite I had always been talked out of going in my Subie by tales of the rough road.

Of course, that was just to keep the Vegas tourists with their sedans and crappy rental car tires out.

So when I finally found myself there in a friend’s 4WD truck, we made the trip. Holy sheeet it was windy that day!

scott,
@scott@onephoto.club avatar

@elaterite Most of the rock trails were pretty faint when we were there too, though we were able to find some pretty deep ones.

I've mostly spent all of my time at DEVA in the touristy areas, so I really would love some backcountry time. Maybe I should prioritize that on the next visit, maybe even rent something to make it happen.
