Summer is here, which means that people are having Discourse about what weight women are allowed to reach before they should not be allowed to wear revealing clothing instead of just letting people wear clothes and shutting the hell up.

There is freedom in the realization that comfort is everything.

Especially in the heat. I won’t suffer anymore. Nope.

One of the things I love is when a noob starts watching Trek shows for the first time, and they're like, This is so silly, it's ridiculous, that guy turned into a lizard and impregnated his captain, that lady got possessed by a sex ghost that belonged to her grandma, the captain is sorting a room full of floofy guinea pigs, the ship runs on mushrooms, this theme song makes no sense, and I'm just like Yeah, isn't it great?! You either get it or you don't, I don't know what to tell you.

astroPug,

@angiebaby @pseudonym @RickiTarr @Kierkegaanks

lol, I love The Room. Not to wax too dramatically about it, but The Room brought me joy during a time when I was feeling not so good.

There are two things that are awesome about bad movies: 1. They’re hilarious

  1. They’re inspiring. Someone took a risk, and they made art, and it didn’t pan out exactly as they’d hoped but they did it anyways, free to do as they please.

I could use one of those. I love how many solar powered things are now available to us.

Feminists taught me that Mad Max Fury Road is not a feminist movie. I get that.

Fury Road was just an action movie where the violent protagonist was a woman with a visible disability, instead of an able bodied man. I get that.

But I still enjoy the fact that George Miller looked at all the dudes that got angry that a woman was the star of a Mad Max movie, and said "Cry about it!" and doubled down.

I am so watching this.

astroPug,

I couldn’t tell anyone either what is or isn’t feminist, nor can I speak for all women, but personally, I found fury road oddly refreshing, and it addressed my fears of what a post-apocalyptic world might be like for me without making me feel weak, or without suggesting that women are weak.

I don’t really have the words for it, but maybe I can say that it “sat right by me”, in a way I wouldn’t expect from a post-apocalyptic movie.

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

astroPug,

@molly0xfff

I guess I could do it still, but going to geocities to find final fantasy art on a dedicated fan page was nice.

It seemed more hand-made, more for us.

Or finding a website that someone hosted on their own, not affiliated with any platform, and then sharing that with friends. Seemed like whoever made the website had their piece of internet real estate and owned it.

On that note, I think he still exists, but wasn’t there a guy who did flash art, and it was great?

Has everyone memory-holed what happened after 9/11? Peaceful protests being declared “un-American”? A 20-year long war that caused an estimated FIVE MILLION deaths?

And people now are all like “oops yeah actually that wasn’t so great”.

Maybe fucking listen to protests sometime. You might learn something.

astroPug,

@thomasfuchs

I am so sorry for anyone who’s lost someone in this horrid conflict.

I am also having deja vu to the aftermath of 9/11.

I was a teenager, and I remember how the government exploited my empathy for the victims and their trauma and fear, so they could start 2 wars.

It feels similar again. Again, some politicians and some media outlets are telling me that some civilians are worth less than others. And by extensions, that some of the people I know are less than others.

astroPug, to random

Hey, has anyone else come across this:

You see a notification that something you have boosted has been edited. You check and it’s now an incendiary troll message you don’t remember ever seeing.

All the comments underneath are clearly in reference to another topic, so these people haven’t seen the troll message either.

What is this? Has this been seen before and where do I report this?

Is the original poster being account hijacked?

astroPug,

@grrrr_shark

Yeah, smells like troll stealing account.

I’m a big fan of that “edit” notification that makes this obvious.

This kind of insidious account-takeover incendiary troll stuff makes me very displeased.

astroPug,

@grrrr_shark

I do not envy the mods and I appreciate the work they do.

astroPug,

@grrrr_shark

I’ve been lucky that my instance is well moderated, but one of these days, I’d love to make an alt and run an instance as well. It would be quite the learning experience though!

How was setting up your own instance? It sounds kind of challenging, tbh.

Googled “bad puns”

One of the search result is titled “A collection of bad puns”.

I haven’t looked at it but it seems like a pretty neat indie band name.

astroPug,

Of course the question than becomes whether “collection” is the right noun here. A “murder” of puns seems appropriate for the really groan inducing ones.

really upsetting to see former Wikimedia Foundation director and CEO Katherine Maher getting targeted by the rightwing outrage machine in her new role as NPR CEO. she's wonderful, and NPR is lucky to have her. i hope they stand behind her.

astroPug,

@molly0xfff

I don’t like them going after Maher. I don’t like to see the right harass another woman.

I am not the most fluid but I would be willing to contribute to NPR to make a point. If there was a pointed and noticeable uptick of donations - the opposite of a boycott, if you will - would someone notice? Hell, would they report on it?

Something a lot of white folk don't realize happens to Black people a lot:

When there is a competition between a Black person and a white person for a coveted prize, if the white person wins, they're celebrated. If the Black person wins... they're asked to share the prize with the white person that came in second place.😮

This happens to Black women more often than Black men.

Ugh. I saw and remembered why YouTube comments under non-niche interest videos are generally a swamp.

I wonder how bot-heavy those sections are. So many comments are just derivative of each other, not only in content but in language. Or maybe they’re organic bullies copying each other. Either way, they're just awful.

British meritocracy in action:

"0.3% of the British population owns 66% of the country, and these 160,000 families who own two-thirds of Great Britain largely descend from the army of William the Conqueror — the first Norman King of England who first conquered the country in 1066."

astroPug,

@Greengordon @sleepfreeparent @onepict @cstross @alex

Sorry to interject here, but that original post seems to have been taken over by a troll.

The original post now says some troll message. I learned from the edit notification to boosts, and I wanted at least some of the people in this thread to know as well.

Any idea how to help the original poster, or what to do?

astroPug,

@simon_brooke @Greengordon @sleepfreeparent @onepict @cstross @alex

Yes, bad actor is also a possibility. I never like to assume the worst but sometimes…

So I’m that scenario, the assumption would be that this person posts something about a UK topic (Coutts bank was in the comment replies) and then, after people comment and boost, replace tags original post and article with “incendiary troll message”?

Very shady.

#troll

astroPug,

@Greengordon @sleepfreeparent @onepict @cstross @alex

No, the original one that we were all responding to or boosting.

Edit for clarity: my bad, I realize I was being a bit vague, Greengordo. The original post after edits is by someone called alex@dadsite.cool and if memory serves, was on a UK related topic (Coutts bank is mentioned in replies).
