Seafood Products Association was getting ready to dispose of stored cans of seafood (salmon) that it had store for years. Before doing so, it decided to ask the University of Washington if it wanted stacks of dusty boxes of long-expired canned salmon. Researchers were able to recover parasites and reconstruct how infection burden that has changed over the course of 42 years in four salmon species and their effect on mammal infection. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/decades-old-cans-of-salmon-reveal-changes-in-ocean-health/

@LaNaehForaday Man has the capacity of doing and creating great things but the track record appears to be leading to a precipice...I purposefully state that it is Man rather than Humanity as men are the ones driving this based on financial and economic principles.

Verily, an Alphabet precision health technology company, today announced it was selected by the #CentersforDiseaseControl (#CDC) to support the agency’s National #Wastewater #Surveillance System (NWSS). The CDC launched NWSS in September 2020 to coordinate and build the nation’s capacity to track the presence of #SARSCoV2 in wastewater samples collected across the country. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20231002398948/en/U.S.-Centers-for-Disease-Control-and-Prevention-Selects-Verily-to-Support-National-Wastewater-Monitoring

It appears that actuarial science will set the tone for accepting climate change rather than the voluminous quantity of climate data. Yes, hitting you financially will sober some deniers. #California will let #insurance companies consider #climatechange when setting their prices, a move aimed at preventing insurers from fleeing the state over fears of massive losses from #wildfires and other natural disasters. #water #flooding #floods #naturaldisasters https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/california-allow-property-insurers-factor-climate-risks-pricing-rcna116914

Time to rethink current #weather models? The record-shattering 2021 heatwave in the Pacific Northwest (peaking at 49.6°C in Lytton, BC) raised the question, whether heat #extremes intensify faster than projected, and whether current generations of global models are unable to even reproduce such events. #climatechange https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-40112-4

@stevesplace As with any predictive analysis, it heavily depends on data points. As more of these outlier occurrences are added to the data set then we'll see how they affect forecasts. Or, rethink how the outlier points should no longer be grouped within currently defined standard deviations...

Big corporations, golf courses & hotels have been taking #water from locals for years. Despite her personal calamity, Tereariʻi, a grassroots attorney, already knew that the fight for Maui’s future was about to intensify, and at its heart would not be fire, but another element entirely: water. Specifically, the #waterrights of Native Hawaiians, rights that a long parade of plantations, real estate developers, and luxury resorts have been stifling for nearly two centuries. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/17/hawaii-fires-maui-water-rights-disaster-capitalism
