Sheril, to books
@Sheril@mastodon.social avatar

Once again, I’m in need of a new book to get lost in & would love recommendations 📚

Some of my favorite genres include science fiction, historical fiction & satire. What are you reading?

sellathechemist,
@sellathechemist@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril Tristram Shandy. A book for life.

Karendipitee,

@Sheril Some new historical fiction I enjoyed: Claire Messud's This Strange Eventful History and Vanessa Chan's The Storm We Made.

We were taught to fear humanoid robots & drones, but bots & algorithms have proven quite effective at promoting geopolitical instability.

“The universe is expanding, and faster now than it did in the past. Scientists don't know why, but the leading explanation is that the universe contains something that has a repulsive gravitational effect - it pushes the universe apart instead of pulling it back together. This phenomenon is called dark energy.”

@Sheril "or, we've biffed a bit of math or observation somewhere along the extremely long chain of reasoning it takes to get to this conclusion."

But, the universe is certainly mighty weird, and is under no obligation to be sensible

The ability to string words together should not be confused with the ability to comprehend the incomprehensible.

‘Tis the season I lose my kitchen for a week. But that also means I get to hang out with the great WKAR-PBS folks who make Serving Up Science so much fun. Season 5 should be a good one 🌶️

Controversial, but shouldn’t be:

Science & religion are not mutually exclusive.

DrDST,
@DrDST@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril Not intrinsically but:
1- Science cannot include religious explanations unless they can be described in naturalistic ways, by which I mean the "god" acting within the laws of nature. Many religious people would not be happy with such a rule.
2- Many religions make metaphysical claims, which may be at odds with scientific evidence.

gottavisitmongolia,
@gottavisitmongolia@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril I strongly disagree.. primary purpose of religion was to be substitute for science - god as a box filled with all the stuff human mind couldn't explain. As science progressed, that box was becoming more and more empty 🧐..
Like a placeholder for scientific discoveries - "hey let's say god is responsible for this until science comes to a real explanation"

"Nope. China was gonna sell us some but we put the extra taxes on that so no one can afford that either."

Good job folks. 😞🙄😓

Science isn’t “truth.” It isn’t simply a series of facts.

Science is an iterative process. We continue to test hypotheses & refine ideas.

Science is always changing as we learn more.

clwho,
@clwho@mastodon.social avatar

@Sheril The more we learn the more we know how little we know. The more we know how little we actually know, the more we know how much we need to learn.

By a freakish coincidence, this Doonesbury comic about Nixon, the first one dropped from the Post in many years (but not Doonesbury's last) came out on May 31, 1973 - fifty-one years ago today, less one day.

Actually, Garry Trudeau can run it tomorrow morning, the exact 51st anniversary.

Just an advisory to all American friends:

His new first name is "Convicted Felon", the full name must be used henceforth:

Convicted Felon Donald Trump.

There’s a lot of commentary about the film The Idea of You bc Anne Hathaway plays a 40 year old mom who is attractive.

I have not seen the movie, but as a mom of 2 who is also older than Anne Hathaway, the seemingly widespread surprise(?) that women of a certain age can still be engaging & lovely seems so silly.

KingShawn,

@Sheril @lisamelton It’s way past silly and headed into offensive.

Henrietta “Etty” Darwin was born in 1843, the eldest of Charles Darwin’s daughters to reach adulthood.

She became a key editor of her father’s scientific writing, most notably The Descent of Man & Selection in Relation to Sex, published in 1871.

Charles Darwin considered Etty a “dear coadjutor, fellow-labourer” & lively member of an intellectually stimulating household. https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/unpublished-journal-offers-new-take-on-darwins-daughter #science #HistoryRemix
