I entered random words/phrases from a load of #LinkedIn posts into an online text shuffler, clicked shuffle a couple of times, then picked a random office image from a free image library. And now I'm pretty sure that many of the sponsored posts must be bots. Either that or I should go into business consultancy myself.

🧵 Punk vs Prog

Another cultural pundit on TV last night dragging out the threadbare 'Punk was a response to Prog Rock' chestnut. When TV documentaries repeat this punk/prog cliche they always cherrypick Prog's most ludicrous moments (that many prog fans don't like either) to support the claim...
At the time, John Lydon, wore a 'I hate Pink Floyd' t-shirt. Punks also wore swastikas but were far from nazis. Lydon says it was a performative gesture...

New drawing. A cinema I frequently visited as a child. It's pictured here as I remember it, circa December 1977/January 1978. It has long since been demolished.

If you'd like to read a little more about the cinema, here's a link:

I've been hunting for this specific typeface/font for ages, but can never find it. It was used for cinema light box/marquees in the UK in the 1960s-1980s. It's close to some of the usual suspects (Gill Sans, Human521, Futura, DIN, Century, etc ), but no cigar. Any ideas?

I still find it utterly absurd that is a mandatory part of all news broadcasts. For someone with zero interest in sport, it has sounded like this to me for 50+ years: "Those were the main news headlines... Now, rodent news: Manchester Zoo has loaned Señor Fluffi, a Spanish gerbil, from Zoo Aquarium de Madrid for £20 million. They have also expressed interest in acquiring a squirrel..."

Reading about how the toxic American eugenics movement of the 1920s inspired Hitler et al, to put their recommendations into action. And I also realise that some twittering billionaires are again repeating (long debunked) statements made by the blatantly racist, ableist eugenics movement.

A while back, I re-created a graphic that featured in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a very minor graphic in the film's cornucopia of special effects but I've always liked it. My original version of the BBC 12 logo contained a couple of errors (including the typeface), so I thought it was time to update it...

No wonder Miles Davis snapped up Shorter for his legendary 2nd Great Quintet, which not only adopted his style, but also seemed to "communicate by mental telepathy" after his arrival.

Jack Dorsey is furious that #Bluesky has attracted "very very common" people. He also doesn't like the idea of moderation tools facilitating the banning of racists.

All these tech billionaires are like a version of the movie Big, in which a pre-adolescent boy wakes up in the body of an aging Howard Hughes. Or Colonel Kurtz. Or a sardine.

I'm revisiting early-mid 1980s albums by prog rock (& related) artists, when they decided to try new, more stripped down, approaches, many of which provoked vilification & even decades-long grudges among older fans who accused their favourite bands of selling out (see also: Queen's Hot Space album).
