This Jack Dorsey interview has confirmed so many things about Twitter and Bluesky that I had long speculated about.

I’ve known forever that Dorsey never wanted Twitter to be a content gatekeeper. Instead, due to fiduciary responsibilities, Twitter was forced into being one.

Bluesky was supposed to be Twitter’s means of removing themselves from content gatekeeping. But as time has gone on, Bluesky are repeating the same mistakes as Twitter.

As for why Bluesky started a new protocol instead of adopting ActivityPub, which was already a W3C standard, I suspect it’s because he didn’t like how ActivityPub dealt with identity.

MattFerrel,

@atomicpoet the “mistake” that Dorsey is whining about is moderation.

👀Via Timothy Snyder:

's allies are selling out in exchange for backing in the election.

A Trump victory in November would finish off US democracy.

And a Russian victory in Ukraine would doom freedom generally.

If this minority coalition of international fascists wins in 2024, life will be rotten for everyone else indefinitely.

If you want a chance to live in a decent world, you've got half a year to act.

MattFerrel,

@peteriskrisjanis @GottaLaff respectfully, we who live in the United States have a solid grasp of what a future Trump term would bring. The lead up to the 2016 election was full of people downplaying how bad a Trump presidency would be, and it’s happening again for this #2024election

“When the Press tells you Joe Biden is old, what they really mean is that Joe Biden is boring.

They're not wrong. Biden is boring. Good government should be boring. You shouldn't have to think about it all the time. You shouldn't have to spend every minute worrying if the lunatic in charge is going to start a trade war or invade your uterus or just randomly decide to drop nuclear bombs on a hurricane.

But boring doesn't sell.”

You know, besides everything.

Here we go again: Someone replies “we DESERVE” who we get in elections… Me: No, we didn’t DESERVE Trump. (There were dirty tricks, election interference, 7 million more for Hillary). He then felt he had to explain we don’t use pop vote in elections. No kidding. I asked that he “please don’t twist my words, my issue was “DESERVE”. His reply? “I’ll make a conscious effort to passively consume your content without further engagement moving fwd.”

I never sugg he shouldn’t opine. Debating here is 🤪

MattFerrel,

@GottaLaff you’re right, he’s wrong. It’s the same argument about red states where there is a sizable group that did not vote for red state political candidates, don’t “deserve” them, and are actively harmed them.

Careful about using this decision to dump on the Supreme Court. There are plenty of legitimate concerns about this court, but today's ruling may not be a prime example.

For one thing, it was a unanimous ruling. The liberal justices concurred, even though they split on certain aspects of the ruling. This was going to happen.

Importantly, the court did not rule on whether Trump engaged in insurrection. Colorado determined he did. We all saw his mob. People died. It's our job to judge him.

MattFerrel,

@mastodonmigration the ruling was expected, but the conservative majority chose to go further than needed to invent unnecessary hurdles:

Despite the unanimity of the justices, I disagree with the Supreme Court’s judgment that states may not enforce section 3 of the 14th A. That judgment is the bottom line. But far more dangerous is the majority opinion, which includes discussion that goes beyond this bottom line. Five justices have tried to prospectively prescribe two requirements irrelevant to the Colorado case. First, they claim that only Congress, not the judiciary or executive branch may enforce section 3. 1/ #LawFedi

MattFerrel,

@heidilifeldman it’s just Calvinball all the time with the conservatives.

Stay on target! Hopium Chonicles author and political analyst Simon Rosenberg nails it again today.

"Its been a core part of Trump’s strategy this year to get us to focus on the latest drama in the courts - this motion, that ruling, will he show? - and not on the crimes he’s committed or winning the 2024 election. It’s been a strategic diversion, and we need to stop playing along..."

Thanks Simon!

MattFerrel,

@mastodonmigration right, we should care a lot more about his potential election and what he would do than any consequences for past crimes

What a disappointment that Mehdi Hasan is joining forces with Substack for his new media company. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/digital/mehdi-hasan-zeteo-msnbc-1235838100/

I might have subscribed to something like this if it was hosted by people with better ethics.

@GottaLaff I really don’t understand why Democrats haven’t worked on a discharge petition. It takes time, but would put pressure on Johnson and the Republicans who claim they want more aid to Ukraine.

“Pundits suggest replacing President Biden as the Democratic nominee because they don’t understand the job of the presidency or how conventions work. Lawrence O’Donnell gives a history lesson in governing in the age of television.”

https://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/watch/lawrence-on-what-they-don-t-tell-you-about-the-dump-biden-fantasy-204684869613

MattFerrel,

@GottaLaff “They don’t care” is painfully accurate

MattFerrel,

@seanwithwords @GottaLaff Biden will be the nominee because EVERY incumbent in recent history runs again and wins the nomination. There was nothing stopping serious challengers, but most recognize the power of incumbency. Trump lost because he was a historically bad president. But you go back to 1980 and you have two terms each for Reagan, Clinton, George W, Obama, and probably Biden. Incumbents losing like Trump and George HW are the exceptions.
