I like the idea of iodine ion thrusters. The trouble with iodine reacting with everything is a bit of a headache. But when built according iodine ion thrusters are neat.

I'm thinking about the feasibility of building a small scale unscrewed stuhlinger umbrella ship. But replacing the reactor with a solar concentrator to heat silicon oil to run a generator. And replace the cesium grid ion drive with something more modern. Then send it to Venus from Earth orbit.

It wouldn't be the best or most efficient Venus spacecraft, but it would win major aesthetic points for being really cool.

Having just left the NES, it was a real slap in the face. 👌

Realistically I probably can't get the performance I'm after out of a monopropellant peroxide rocket. And I'm not keen on building a bomb with liquid or solid fuel. So it looks like I'm going to have to fall back to hybrid rockets.

This unfortunately means I'll have to deal with the CRA and transport Canada. But I can probably side step that by getting some people with level 3 and 4 rocket certification onboard the project. Or just get my certification which I probably should anyway.

I find myself speculating what pathogens ultimately killed the Martians in the War of the World's.

My conclusions based on their anatomy, environmental exposure, feeding habits, time period, and incubation.

They likely ultimatly sufferd co-infections from many pathogens. But the primary killers where likely Influenza, tuberculosis, and rhinovirus. They had large lungs, perfect for gradual colonization of viruses and bacteria. This is pure speculation but it's fun speculation.

This is inconsequential, but I really like the visuals of the antimatter engines shutdown and startup in Cosmic Ocean. It's a product of how I setup the engine plume, and it looks great.

@nyrath outside of prestige, I don't really see how China landing on the moon impacts Artemis in any tangible way. If we have a Chinese mission on the moon and a NASA mission on the moon. That just means we have more humans on the moon, which is good thing.

But if this cold war mindset boosts Artemis funding then that's also a good thing. Make spaceflights, not conflicts.

For three months, scientists struggled to open the canister of asteroid samples brought back by NASA's OSIRISREx mission

It was frustrating and a bit embarrassing. But at long last they have succeeded. The fasteners are off. Here come the asteroid rocks!

@coreyspowell @nyrath the speculation I've heard is either a bit of cold welding in the vaccum, or something to do with thermal cycling over the course of the mission. But I've also not heard any official explanations.

@BenHigbie art AI is photoshop with less steps. It can be used to help brainstorm or get ideas as a reference. But the raw outputs are not art, it's a photoshop amalgamation of others work. Use it as a reference tool like using Google images, but not to create a final product. I use GPT to help make simple scripts for my games or brainstorm concepts for writing. But I would never let it make a game for me or write a story for me. I still preffer paying real humans for art and script work anyway.

Aaron_DeVries,
@Aaron_DeVries@mastodon.social avatar

@BenHigbie that really sucks. Facebook is a cesspool at the best of times, but that's no excuse. I've seen a lot of artists getting accused of using AI when their portfolios extend back decades.

It's the people who accuse artists of trying to gatekeep that bother me the most. As if being an artist is guaranteed income, or no artists does what they do for any reason other than profit motive.

I found the photon ship model I was working on early n the development of Cosmic Ocean. Originally I was going ot have 3, the antimatter beam core, a photon ship, and a IC fusion drive.

I haven't abandon the idea I just stopped working on other ships as I worked on mechanics. But I still want to make more ship styles for the game. So i'll keep this photon ship around and maybe finish it some time.

@ZachWeinersmith I'm not sure about 4, but I do know if a conversation thread with 3 gets too long it starts to lag, break and have problems the larger the thread gets. I have to delete and start a new contest thread from time to time otherwise it becomes unusable.

@n1xnx if poorly thought out yes. This is why they are usually far behind or far infront of the crew. In the case of my starship here, the crew is a couple km away from the engine, and there are 3 shadow sheilds, the entier supply of hydrogen, antihydrogen, chemical propellants, and water between the engine and crew. They are fine.

Aaron_DeVries,
@Aaron_DeVries@mastodon.social avatar

@isaackuo @n1xnx those are details I suppose I should work out eventually. The engine is a beam core engine. With the reaction taking place inside the magnetic nozzle just outside the physical end of the engine. The engine runs slightly hydrogen rich. So it's a direct thrust affair.

Been thinking about a lithium saltwater rocket. So far I'm at spraying the lithium deuteride water mix into a beryllium graphite engine core, where D+T powerd neutron sources direct multiple neutron beams down the core until they focuse to a point in the fuel spray. I'm just at fission right now. Maybe a magnetic nozzle could compress the D T water plasma to induce fusion? I'm not 100% how controllable it could be with magnetic fields.

Aaron_DeVries,
@Aaron_DeVries@mastodon.social avatar

@nyrath I suspected as much, this may ultimately be a brute force affair similar to controlling an Orion or NSWR. I wonder (assuming power is sufficient) if the exhaust could be ionized further via RF allowing for magnetic compression? Or i may be completely wrong and in the relm of VASMIR. Point is compression of the exhaust to try and induce a 2 stage fission fusion cycle is what I'm musing about.

Was casually reading atomic rockets, and came upon a concept off growth of NSWR that uses lithium-6 deuteride instead of uranium.

Cleaner safer and cheaper. I find this concept fascinating. My dreams of a human mission to Titan are a bit more practical now.
